College Baseball Finals – Guilford 10-3, Southern Virginia 4-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Lou Trosch (Charlotte, N.C./East Mecklenburg) threw a seven-inning shutout in Guilford College’s 3-0 shutout of visiting Southern Virginia Saturday. The win extended the Quakers’ (6-2) winning streak to five and gave them a sweep of the NAIA Knights (2-4). John Macon Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford (Western Carolina)) blasted a grand slam, his fifth homer in six games, in Guilford’s 10-4 opening-game win.

Trosch (1-0) scattered seven hits, walked none and struck out four in his first college start. He allowed only one Knight to third base and took advantage of two inning-ending double plays. He started the final twin-killing in the top of the seventh to end the game.

D.J. Phillips’ (Monroe, N.C./Parkwood) RBI single in the fifth plated Jordan Slate, who led off the inning with a double down the left-field line. Kent Peterson’s (Albemarle, N.C./Nations Ford (S.C.)) RBI double scored Phillips and gave Trosch a 2-0 lead. Casey Mann’s two-out single to right added an insurance run in the sixth. Phillips finished with a season-high three hits.

Barrett Price had three of Southern Virginia’s seven hits. Lefty Tyler King (1-1) took the loss.

Guilford jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the opener, thanks to a two-run Danny Ditota double in the four-run second. Southern Virginia chipped away and made it a 5-3 game with an unearned run in the sixth before the Quakers broke the game open with five runs in the home sixth. All of the runs came with two outs and were unearned. Smith’s blast, his team-leading fifth of the year, soared over the right-centerfield fence and opened a 9-3 Quakers’ edge. He finished with two hits and five RBI on the day.

Borja Jones-Berasaluce (1-1) notched his first win of the season for Guilford.

Southern Virginia’s Andrew Snider had two hits, including a solo homer in the third. Dale Brown and Robbie Key also had two hits. Starter Mitch Mantle (0-1) walked six in 5.2 innings.

Guilford hosts Case Western Reserve Sunday (2/26) in a noon doubleheader at McBane Field.
