On Feb. 1, the day the nation’s high schools held their signing days when seniors ink their letters of intent to attend their respective colleges, Ragsdale High School’s ceremony had a notable omission.

Alongside football teammates Larry Ogunjobi and Keith Tanksley, as well as soccer
star Eroncia Berry, Trey Grimes was expected to sign with Lenoir-Rhyne University.
But at the last minute, the Hickory college had a change of heart/personnel and
decided not to honor its offer to the standout linebacker. This not only forced
Grimes to rethink his options but the Ragsdale coaching staff to get on the phone
and alert their college counterparts that a prospect had suddenly become available.

Winston-Salem State wasted no time in offering Grimes a chance to play for their
program, which finished 13-1 last year and was one game away from playing for the
national Division II championship.

Jim Modlin and Coach Norwood on Grimes:
Grimes got his moment in the sun he was denied on signing day, when he was presented a plaque as WPET Player of the Week by radio color commentator Jim Modlin.

“This was for his performance against East Forsyth, a 20-13 win on a Monday night,” said Modlin, a former All-State basketball player for Ragsdale. “His was not only a great game but one of the best we saw all year by anybody. It seemed he was either in on every tackle or near it. He was all over the place.”

Coach Tommy Norwood said that it was that “knack for the ball” that makes Grimes such a great player.

“That nose for the ball is all instinct,” he said. “That’s not something you coach. He just naturally sees the area, and he’s so quick and strong he makes plays you wouldn’t expect a normal player to make.”
