Elon Women’s Tennis Wins 7-0 Over UNC Asheville

ELON, N.C. – The Elon women’s tennis team improved its record to 9-3 this afternoon, March 4, at The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, as the Phoenix handed the UNC Asheville Bulldogs a 7-0 setback.

The Phoenix swept every singles and doubles set in the win, its seventh victory in its last eight matches.

The doubles team of Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker improved their record to 10-1 after defeating UNCA’s Christine Boissevain and Emily McNall, 8-5. The maroon and gold won the doubles point after the teams of Barbora Lazarova/Viviana Stavreva and Briana Berne/Maria Camara Ruiz claimed wins over the Bulldogs.

Johnston was equally impressive at No. 1 singles, topping Zoe Hamel 6-1, 6-0 to improve her record to 5-4 this season.

Lazarova won her seventh match of the season after recording a 6-0, 6-2, win over UNCA’s McNall at No. 2 singles. Lazarova is 3-0 this season in the second position.

Stavreva and Jansaker won both of their matches to secure the match win for the Phoenix, topping UNC Asheville’s Amryn Soldier and Boissevain, respectively. Stavreva improved her record to 7-3 on the year, while Jansaker won her seventh straight match to improve her singles record to 7-3.

Camara Ruiz registered a 6-1, 6-4 win over UNC Asheville’s Jenna Dodge at No. 5 singles to improve her record to 6-3 on the year, while Berne dominated at No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 decision over UNCA’s Amie Cloer.

Elon opens Southern Conference play on Tuesday, March 6, when the Phoenix heads to Boone, N.C., to face instate rival Appalachian State at 2:30 p.m.
