The Greensboro College baseball team pounded out 18 hits in a 12-5 win at Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday afternoon. Overall, ten Pride players recorded hits in the victory, led by a 4-5, three run, two RBI performance by Grant Kelley.
Greensboro struck first in the opening frame on an RBI single by Steven Pfeiffer. Following a single by James Feldmann, Kelley doubled to score Pfeiffer and give The Pride a 2-0 lead.
The Pfeiffer, Feldmann and Kelley trio were back at it again in the third as Greensboro tacked on three more runs. Kelley singled home Pfeiffer, and Feldmann crossed home on a wild pitch. Kelley scored on a single by Seth Caison to conlcude the outburst.
Following a run by Hampden-Sydney in the bottom of the third, The Pride struck back in the fourth on an RBI ground out to short by Austin Catherina that brought Matthew Parker home. Catherina added to the lead in the sixth with an RBI single to push the lead to 7-1.
The Tigers narrowed the gap to 7-3 with two runs in the sixth before Greensboro answered with a pair of runs in the eighth and ninth. A Caison single scored Kelley and Pfeiffer in the eighth with Raynel Pena and Everett Blalock contributing RBI hits in the ninth. Hampden-Sydney also added a single run in the final two frames but it did not matter as The Pride rolled to the 12-5 final.
In addition to Kelley’s game high four hits, Pfeiffer went 3-4 with three runs scored and RBI, while Feldmann concluded the day with three hits in four at-bats and one run scored. Caison also contributed multiple hits, going 2-5 with three RBI.
Michael Cobb moved to 2-0 on the mound with 6.0 innings of work. Cobb gave up one run on six hits. Finishing out the final three innings in relief were Kris Peedon, Brandon Matthews and Jim Pirro.
Greensboro is now 8-5 on the season. The Pride will have a quick turnaround, hosting Immaculata on Wednesday for a doubleheader at War Memorial Stadium. First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m.
