College Softball Finals – Guilford 10-7, Mary Baldwin 2-4

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Brittany Donathan (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) went three-for-three and earned her first college pitching victory Sunday in Guilford College’s 7-4 win over visiting Mary Baldwin College. The victory extended the Quakers’ winning streak to four after Guilford downed the Squirrels (3-5), 10-2, in a five-inning opener.

Donathan, a sophomore making her second college start, carried a one-hitter into the sixth inning before Mary Baldwin scored three times. She helped herself at the plate with a career-high three hits, including a two-out, two-run single in the Quakers two-run fourth inning. Donathan also had an RBI single in the third.

Ashley Boteler (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) went two-for-three with a run-scoring double in the third. Guilford scored in the first four innings to build a 7-1 lead.

Sabrina Desper (Staunton, Va./Stuarts Draft) hit an RBI triple in Mary Baldwin’ sixth inning and later scored on pitcher Amanda Miller’s (Staunton, Va./Riverheads) single. Miller (0-3) allowed seven runs, four of which were earned, on 10 hits.

Guilford pounded 15 hits, including two homers, in a 10-2 win that was halted after the fifth inning. Morgan Andrews (Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central) went three-for-four with four RBI and opened the scoring with a solo homer in the first, her first of the year. She also had a two-run single in Guilford’s three-run fourth inning and ended the game with a bases-loaded single to shallow right field.

Freshman Rachel Howard (Efland, N.C./Cedar Ridge) blasted her first college home run, a two-run shot to left that opened a 5-0 Guilford lead in the third. The homer scored Kimberly Keys (Laurinburg, N.C./Richmond Senior), who was aboard after the second of her three singles in the game.

Senior pitcher Shelby Bowser (Winston-Salem, N.C./Ledford) benefitted from the offensive outburst and improved to 2-0 with six strikeouts in five innings.

Desper had one of the Squirrels’ four hits, an RBI double in the fourth. Starter Jessica Hogle (Verona, Va./Fort Defiance) fanned six in five innings, but also yielded 13 hits and 10 runs, eight of which were earned.

Guilford visits Salem College Wednesday (3/14) in a nonconference doubleheader.
