High Point Men’s Golf in Third After Day One of the Bash at the Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The High Point men’s golf team fired a one-over 289 to finish day one of the Bash at the Beach in third place out of 15 teams on Sunday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Three different HPU players shot an even-par 72 to lead the Panthers on the day.

“I was extremely pleased with our round today,” head coach J.B. White said. “I believe the guys are starting the jell in preparation for the conference tournament. I am hoping that the next two rounds follow suit.”

Senior Thomas McLellanand freshmen Sam Stewart and Charles Valluzzo all carded 72 to finish in a tie for 11th. Senior Curtis Brotherton finished one-stroke behind the trio in a tie for 17th with an opening round 73 while junior Chase Wilson turned in an 18-hole score of 75 to end the day tied for 31st.

Xavier and Gardner-Webb each shot a combined 288 in the first round to finish tied atop the team standings, one-stroke ahead of High Point. Fellow Big South members Campbell and Radford each shot 291 and currently sit in a tie for fourth.

Gardner-Webb’s Daniel Kim and Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume tied for the low round of the day with matching scores of 69, three under par. The pair lead the individual rankings by one stroke over Radford’s Weston Eklund and Michael Wade and Will Smith of William & Mary who each carded a two-under 70.

High Point will return to action on Monday in the second round of the Bash at the Beach. The Panthers will tee off at the first hole of The Surf Golf and Beach Club at 10:20 am.
