College Baseball Final – Tufts 24, Guilford 6

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Wade Hauser went three-for-five with five runs batted in in visiting Tufts University’s 24-6 baseball win at Guilford College Monday. Classmate Connor McDavitt added hit a two-run homer among his three hits and knocked in four.

The Jumbos (3-0) scored an 18-4 win at Washington and Lee University Sunday and picked right up where they left off in Monday’s tilt. After Nick Izzo struck out to open the game, Tufts had 14 consecutive batters reach base safely without benefit of an error. The Jumbos had eight of their 27 hits in the first inning, which, combined with four walks and two hit batsmen, resulted in an 11-run frame. Eric Weikert and Tim Mitropoulos both hit two-run singles in the first and Hauser smacked a two-run double.

Guilford (12-11) used three pitchers in the first inning and six for the game. The Quakers struggled with their control and combined for five walks, seven hit batsmen, three wild pitches and two balks.

Hauser and McDavitt were among six Jumbos with three or more hits. Mitropoulos had three hits and scored four times. Sam Sager doubled among his three hits and scored three runs. Bryan Egan and Tom Howard also had three hits. Izzo belted a solo home run in the fifth, one of Tufts’ seven extra-base hits.

Senior southpaw Kevin Gilchrist (1-0) benefitted from offensive outburst to pick up his first win of 2012. He scattered nine hits and three runs over six innings, walked one and fanned four.

Guilford’s Kent Peterson went two-for-two with two RBI. Danny Ditota and Justin Pittman also had two hits and Herc Ingels hit a two-run double in the Quakers’ three-run ninth inning.
