HPU Women’s Golf in Ninth After Two Rounds at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The High Point University women’s golf team shot a combined 317 for the second day in a row on Monday and currently sit in ninth place out of 21 teams at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate in Wilmington, Va., with a two-round score of 634. Freshman Grier Bennett had the low round of the day for HPU with a seven-over 78.

“We shot the same score today but it was a totally different round,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “Although we missed some short putts and we didn’t take advantage of as many of our good shots as wo could have, we are starting to level out as a team. I think everyone is looking for a quick turnaround but we are going for long-term results and I think we are making great progress.”

Bennett scored two birdies on the day to help tie her career-low round. She is currently in a tie for 34th with a two-day total of 159 (81-78). Junior Jessica Neese carded a 79 on Monday and currently leads HPU after two rounds with a 36-hole score of 156 (77-79), leaving her in a tie for 26th.

Junior Audra McShane matched Neese with a 79 on the day and is currently tied with Bennett in 34th for the tournament with a total score of 159 (80-79). Angela Gimenez shot an 81 in the second round, placing her in a tie for 41st with a two-round score of 160 (79-81). Sophomore Margaret Suchan shaved three-strokes off her opening round score with an 85 in the second round and is tied for 80th with a two-day score of 173 (88-85).

Day-one leader Longwood maintained its position atop the team standings, scoring a combined 303 in the second round for a two-round total of 603. The Lancers lead by 11 strokes over St. Leo which moved up to second with a total score of 614 after a second-round 306. Boston College shot 303 to move into third with a total acore of 617 while St. John’s (620) and Lehigh (621) round out the top five heading into the final round.

Kameron Carter of Longwood sits in first on the individual leaderboard after carding a 74 in the second round for a 36-hole score of 145 (71-74). Carter heads into the third round with a three-stroke advantage over Delaware’s Andrea Slane (75-73) and William & Mary’s Kelly Okun (78-70) who are tied for second with matching scores of 148 through two rounds.

The Panthers will return to the Kingsmill Resort for the third and final round of the C&F Bank Intercollegiate on Tuesday, March 20. High Point will tee off at the first hole beginning at 8 a.m.
