GC Women’s Tennis Blows by Mary Baldwin, 7-2

The Greensboro College women’s tennis team downed Mary Baldwin on Saturday, 7-2. The Pride move to within one match of the .500 mark in conference play with a 2-3 record.

Greensboro set the tone for the match by sweeping all three doubles positions. Meredith Kelly and Kristin Smith knocked off Caley Mikesell and Meagan Barron, 8-4, at one; Brittany Cates and Danielle Simpson defeated Erica Gaughan and Katherine Kelly, 8-3, at two; and Hillary Cook and Lauren Fisher finished it off by beating Madeline Ogden and Dalila Smith, 8-2, at three.

In singles play, Kelly dropped Barron at one, 6-1, 6-2; Simpson breezed by Smith at four, 6-1, 6-1; Cook beat Ogden at five, 6-1, 6-0; and Elizabeth Adair picked up a win over Kiana Heath at six, 6-0, 6-0.

Cates and Smith nearly completed a 9-0 sweep but dropped tight, three set matches.

The Pride will host North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Grimsley High School in Greensboro, NC.
