The Pride women’s lacrosse senior class came through in a big way on Tuesday, as Greensboro picked up a key victory over Ferrum. Playing in their last home game wearing the green and white, Melissa Gallaher, Jackie Farrell and Katie Sporing all found the net.
After Ferrum opened the game with an early goal, Gallaher answered with back-to-back goals that pushed the momentum in favor of The Pride. The goals would jumpstart a 7-0 spurt that gave Greensboro a 7-1 lead following Gallaher’s fourth goal with 10:39 to play.
Contributing to the outburst were Gallaher with four goals, Brittany Ziobro with two and Kayla Gonzalez with one. Ziobro would tack on another goal down the stretch to break up a Panther run to close out the half. Greensboro would go into the break on top by a count of 8-4.
Ferrum closed to within 8-5 in the first minute of the second half until Gallaher added her fifth and final goal of the contest at the 28:54 mark. The Panthers would claw within 9-6 but could get no closer as Greensboro pulled away for the 14-8 win behind goals from Ziobro, Farrell, Sporing, Nadya Fedun and Michaela Sandoval.
In addition to her five goals, Gallaher also dished out two assists for seven points. One game following a conference and school record performance, Ziobro finished with seven points on the strength of four goals and three assists.
Tierra Lyles recorded a strong effort in net with four saves over the course of the 60:00 minute game.
The Pride outshot Ferrum 22-13 and picked up 15 total ground balls on the day. Greensboro also made good on 13-14 clear attempts.
With the win, The Pride improve to 5-7 overall and 5-2 in the USA South. Greensboro, the third seed in the conference, will wrap up its regular season with a 7 p.m. road trip to Lynchburg on Wednesday.
