GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College head football coach Chris Rusiewicz announced the intention of seven more incoming students to play football for the Quakers. The students have made their deposits to the college and will enroll for classes beginning in August. They raised Rusiewicz’s second recruiting class at Guilford to 30.
Mitch Ferrick (Centreville, Va.) lettered three years at Centreville High School under coach Chris Haddock. The 6-1, 165-pound quarterback earned Second Team All-Concorde District recognition. Ferrick led his team to the 2011 Northern Region Conference Championship and second place in the Virginia Class 3A Division 6 state playoffs. He also lettered two years with the baseball team and is a member of the National Honor Society. His sister, Jess, plays softball at Marshall University.
Brandon Heath (Asheboro, N.C.) lettered three years under coach Chuck Henderson at Asheboro High School. The 6-0, 230-pound defensive lineman was a two-time All-Randolph County and All-Mid-Piedmont Conference selection. He also earned the 2011 Defensive Line Coaches’ Award and is a member of the school’s Honor Roll.
Jake Long (Whiteville, N.C.) lettered at Whiteville High School under coach Luke Little. The 5-10, 175-pound defensive back earned First Team All-Waccamaw Conference and All-Columbus County recognition. Long also lettered in baseball and was also an all-conference and all-county selection. He is a National Honor Society member and a North Carolina High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete.
Jaylan Martin (Morganton, N.C.) lettered three years under coach Mike Helms at Freedom High School. The 5-8, 170-pound cornerback earned All-South Mountain Athletic Conference honors in football and track. He was named Freedom’s 2010-11 Male Athlete of the Year and a Burke County Football Player of the Week. Martin lettered two years in basketball and three years in track and field. He is also a member of the National Honor Society.
Kahlil Perine (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) lettered three years under coach Ryan Habich at Fuquay-Varina High School. The 5-8, 175-pound safety helped the Bengals to the second round of the 2011 state 4-AA playoffs. Fuquay-Varina was 10-2 and won its second straight league title in 2011. He also lettered three years in track as a sprinter and hurdler and garnered academic all-conference honors.
Perine’s teammate, Hayden Read (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) is also headed to Guilford. Read, 6-0, 170-pound wide receiver, lettered two years under Habich at Fuquay-Varina and earned First Team All-Tri-9 Conference recognition as a senior. He led the team in most receiving categories and special teams tackles. Read contributed to the Bengals’ second-round appearance in the 2011 state 4-AA playoffs, a 10-2 overall record and the school’s second straight league title. He also lettered two years in track and field. A member of the Fuquay-Varina Post of Sons of American Legion and the Future Farmers of America, he is a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award honoree.
Jalen Wiley (Burlington, N.C.) lettered three years under coach Marty Scotten at Jordan Matthews High School. The 5-11, 170-pound defensive back earned honorable mention All-Mid-State 2A Conference and All-Chatham County recognition. Wiley helped his team to consecutive Chatham County football championships. He also lettered twice in basketball and four years in track and field, where he earned all-league honors. Wiley’s uncle, Robert Siler, played college basketball for Wake Forest University.
Guilford opens the 2012 season Sept. 1 against Greensboro College in the annual Gate City Soup Bowl. The 7:00 p.m. contest will be played at 7:00 p.m. on the Quakers’ Appenzeller Field at Armfield Athletic Center.
