Brotherton Sets HPU Record at Big South Men’s Golf Championship

NINETY-SIX, S.C. – Senior Curtis Brotherton set a new HPU Big South Championship record on Tuesday with a four-under 68 in the second round to help HPU finish with a combined score of 293 for the day at the Patriot Golf Club in Ninety-Six, S.C. The Panthers are in eighth place out of nine teams after two rounds with a score of 598.

“We played much better today as a team,” head coach J.B. White said. “We still had a little trouble finishing our rounds but I think we are getting better. I am very happy that we were able to come within one stroke of tying our Big South Championship single-round record. I am looking forward to getting back out on the course tomorrow.”

Brotherton recorded six birdies on the day including one on a 25-foot putt at the ninth hole, his final of the day, to turn in the lowest round of his career. The senior broke HPU’s previous Championship low round of 69 which was achieved three times including once by Brotherton on 2010. He is currently in 23rd with a 36-hole score of 146 (78-68).

“Curtis had a really good round today and I am very proud of the way he played,” White said. “His whole game was pretty good today. He drove the ball well, was very good with his irons and he made his putts. Any time you do well with your drives and your irons there is a really good chance that you will make a few putts and he was able to take advantage of his good shots.”

High Point’s score of 293 is just one-stroke shy of the Panthers’ single-round Big South Championship record. HPU’s best round came in the second round of the 2002 Big South Championship when the team turned in a combined score of 292. High Point has shot 293 just one other time in Big South Championship history, the second round in 2010.

Junior Chase Wilson also finished under par on Tuesday, carding a one-under 71 to finish the second round in a tie for 18th with an even-par 144 (73-71). The junior was bogey-free through his first 11 holes and had three birdies to finish in the red.

Freshman Charles Valluzzo shot a 78 in the second round and is in 38th with a two-day total of 154 (76-78) while senior Thomas McLellan carded a four-over 76 to move in 39th with a 36-hole score of 155 (79-76). Freshman Sam Stewart turned in a 79 and is tied for 41st with a two-round score of 157 (78-79).

Day-one leader Liberty maintained its spot atop the team standings with a score of 555 after shooting a combined 275 on Tuesday. Coastal Carolina set a new Big South Championship record with a score of 273 in the second round to pull to within three-strokes of Liberty at 558. Charleston Southern dropped into sole possession of third with a total score of 564 while Campbell (568) and Winthrop (580) remained in fourth and fifth respectively.

Daniel Kim tied the Big South Championship 18-hole record with a nine-under 63 on Tuesday to move into first place on the individual leader board with a 36-hole score of 133 (70-63). Kim leads by four strokes over Liberty’s Robert Karlsson and Coastal Carolina’s Charlie Winegardner who each shot a 68 on Tuesday to finish with a two-day score of 137 (69-68).

The Panthers return to the Patriot Golf Club for the third and final round of the Big South Championship on Wednesday, April 18. High Point will tee off from the 10th tee at 8:30 a.m., and will play along with Radford and Presbyterian.
