HPU Men’s Soccer Adds Two Recruits to 2012 Class

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University men’s soccer team and head coach Dustin Fonder announced the addition of two players to the incoming 2012 recruiting class on Monday. Defender’s Garrett Blodgett and Erien Campbell will join with the nine previously announced recruits to comprise HPU’s 2012 class.

“We are very excited to add both of these young men to our 2012 recruiting class,” Fonder said. “They are both quality athletes with sound character and we believe that they will bring added depth to our team next season.”

Prior to High Point: Three-year letter winner from Providence High School … Two-time All-Region selection (2010-2011) … Named to the All-Conference team in 2010 and 2011 … Played club soccer with the North Meck Academy for two years and currently plays for the South Carolina United Battery of the US Soccer Development Academy … Won two USYS Regional Championships with North Meck … Appeared in two USYS National Championship tournaments.

Personal: Son of Hazen and Leigh Ann Blodgett … Born on Oct. 21, 1993 … Has one older brother, Hank, and two younger sisters, Margaret and Caroline … Mother played volleyball at Wake Forest.

Fonder on Blodgett: “Garrett is a high school teammate of fellow recruit Ben Burdon and is also the starting centerback for the South Carolina United Battery Academy team. We feel that he has the size and strength needed to play at the Division I level. We think once he gets into a consistent training environment and develops a bit technically he could be a solid centerback option for us.”

Prior to High Point: Three-year letter winner from Skyline High School … Did not play for his prep team in his senior year due to US Soccer Development Academy rules … Had 15 goals and seven assists as a right back during his final two High School seasons … Named Team MVP as a freshman … Plays club soccer with Solar Chelsea FC of the US Soccer Development Academy … Won the 2012 U-19 Dallas.

Personal: Son of Lester Campbell and Consuelo Cortes … Born on Aug. 22, 1994 … Has one older sister, Alicia who plays volleyball at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Fonder on Campbell: “Erien comes to us from Solar FC out of Texas, one of the best academy teams in the country. He is a tremendous talent who is blessed with all of the physical gifts needed to succeed. He is a big kid who also possesses a great deal of speed. We think he can come in and help us at right back with his natural ability to get up and down the flank.”
