Southwest Guilford defeated Northwest Guilford in the semi-finals of the
Piedmont Triad 4A Conference Tournament at Ragsdale on Friday night behind
the complete game pitching of junior Matt Orth. Orth went the distance
striking out 10 Viking batters and allowing 3 runs on 5 hits.

Southwest scored single runs in the first and second as Matt Dale singled in
Austin Zente who was on board after being hit by a pitch in the first while
Kyle Miller got a base hit to drive in Tyler Kellam who had doubled to make
it 2 – 0.

Northwest got a single run in the fourth after Keaton Haack led off with a
single, went to second on a ground out and came home on a hit and run single
by Matt Bond. The Vikings took the lead in the fifth after Stephen Hemrick
led off with a walk and went to third on a double by Colson Everett.
Jackson Bellinkes drove Hemrick home with a single and Everett scored on a
Grayson Evans sac fly to make the score 3 – 2 Northwest.

Southwest came right back in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Kyle
Miller doubled to right center. Coach Sonny Gann elected to intentionally
walk Orth to put runners on first and second. After Juday got the second
out on a strikeout, he walked Matt Dale to load the bases. Sean Geoghegan
then got the big hit of the night with a solid single up the middle to drive
in two runs as the Cowboys regained the lead at 4 – 3. Southwest added two
more in the sixth as Northwest made three errors in the inning and Orth
closed the door as he went three up and three down over the final two
innings to wrap up the 6 – 3 win.

Kyle Miller was 2 for 2 for the Cowboys with a double and two RBI’s and a
run scored. Sean Geoghegan was 1 for 3 with the two ribbies. The Cowboys
move to 20 – 5 on the season and will face the East Forsyth – Glenn winner
in the PTC Tourney finals on Monday night at 7:00 PM at Ragsdale

With the loss, Northwest falls to 14 – 11 for the season and will now await
their opponent in the State Tournament.

  2. Geoghean with the big hit and playing off a single that drove in two runs….

  3. Newton pitched most of the night for SEG. Austin Bain came in to close out the night and did a good job not allowing any more runs in the 7th inning.

  4. On SEG-Southern Alamance Baseball from Burlington Times-News:

GREENSBORO — Jacob Wolfe said he felt right in the bullpen before Friday night’s Metro Conference Tournament championship.

How right could be seen with Wolfe jogging off the mound after hurling a three-hit shutout in an 8-0 victory against top-seed Southeast Guilford.

“Everything was working, I just got that feeling and went with it,” Wolfe said. “It’s a good atmosphere out here and the team was behind me. Everything felt right.”

Wolfe struck out eight and walked two, needing 93 pitches for the shutout. He threw 56 strikes and first-pitch strikes to 15 of 25 batters he faced.

“He threw the first-pitch strike and then he could just throw whatever he wanted,” Patriots coach Jason Smith said. “He was at the top of his game, which is moving it around the plate and they didn’t hit many balls hard. When we get that effort out of Wolfe, he’s really tough.”

It was the ninth straight victory for Southern Alamance (21-6), and the Patriots wasted no time in seizing control.
