Elon’s Chris Thomas Named SoCon Men’s Soccer Player of the Week

ELON, N.C. – For the second time in three weeks Elon’s senior forward Chris Thomas has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week the league office announced on Tuesday morning.

Thomas garnered his second weekly accolade after scoring four goals last week against competition leading the Phoenix to a pair of wins. Thomas is second in the nation in total goals (10), points per game (3.14), total points (22) and goals per game (1.43).

At William & Mary, Thomas had a pair of strikes including the golden goal in overtime to give the maroon and gold a 2-1 victory last Wednesday, Sept. 19. Thomas netted two more goals in the first half of the Phoenix’s 2-0 victory over sixth-ranked and last season’s runner-up in the NCAA College Cup Charlotte on Saturday, Sept 22.

Thomas was also honored by the College Soccer News (CSN) on Monday morning being named the National Player of the Week. The Snellville, Ga. native has scored 40 goals for his career trailing only Mike Wessels’ (1985-89) mark of 43 scores on the program’s all-time list.

The weekly award is the fifth of Thomas’ career, moving him into sole possession of second in SoCon history in that category, one back of UNCG’s Randi Patterson, who was honored six times from 2003-05.

Elon returns to the pitch tonight at Rudd Field to take on the Highlanders of Radford. Kickoff is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
