Whitney Knight(WS Reynolds/FGCU) to miss 2012/2013 season with torn ACL

from the Florida Gulf Coast University web site:

FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU(Florida Gulf Coact University) sophomore guard Whitney Knight (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds HS) will miss the entire 2012-13 women’s basketball season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee injury during preseason workouts last week, head coach Karl Smesko announced Wednesday.

“This injury is a setback for Whitney and our team,” said Smesko. “We definitely were expecting big things from her this season. Whitney will aggressively rehab this injury and we look forward to having her return to the court even stronger during the 2013-14 season.”

The Winston-Salem, N.C. native, who was expected to see her role significantly increase, appeared in all 32 games for the Eagles in 2011-12 and averaged 8.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks in 17.1 minutes. Knight, an A-Sun All-Freshmen team selection and 2012 A-Sun All-Tournament team honoree, finished the season ranked first on the team, second in the conference and 68th in the nation with 1.7 blocks per game, which placed her second in the single-season FGCU record books. FGCU’s first-ever top 100 recruit, Knight closed out her rookie campaign with a solid performance against St. Bonaventure in the first round of the Raleigh Region of the NCAA Tournament (Mar. 18, 2012) with eight points, four rebounds and a block in just 15 minutes.

The specific date for surgery has yet to be determined and following rehabilitation Knight will return to the court for FGCU in 2013-14 as a redshirt sophomore.

The Green and Blue will hit the court for the first time this season on Saturday, Nov. 10, when they host Warner in the 2012-13 home-opener at 1:30 p.m. at Alico Arena.

  1. That is terrible news. Women are so much more vulnerable to this injury. Many of them have it multiple times. Good luck to her in her rehab.

  2. Sad News… Never want to hear about anyone having set backs. Rehab Whitney and come back stronger
