College Baseball Final – Bridgewater takes 2 from Guilford

Eagles Improve to 7-0 in Conference with Sweep at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Derrik Walling tallied five hits in Bridgewater College’s two-game Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) sweep of Guilford College Saturday. The Eagles claimed game one, 10-2, and game two, 5-0.

The Bridgewater (13-5, 7-0 ODAC) bats exploded in the third inning of game one. The Eagles took advantage of a gap in the Quakers’ defense. Four consecutive batters had RBI singles to shallow right field, followed by a Darren Yoder three-run homer to left field, putting Bridgewater up, 7-0. The Quakers (10-13, 3-7 ODAC) scored a run in the fourth and sixth, but could not overcome the deficit.

Game two started much slower, the Eagles up 1-0 heading into the seventh inning. Will James (1-5) took the loss, but only allowed one run in his first six innings. A Walling two-run single up the middle represented James’ second and third earned runs before he retired in the seventh. Justin Morrison allowed two runs in his two innings pitched and Tyler Tuttle pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Eagles’ Bryan Sanderson went 3-for-5 during game one. Yoder led with three RBI on two hits. Ryan Smith added two RBI during the first game. Walling led game two with two hits and two RBI. Brendan Howell also had two hits. Christian Armentrout (2-0) claimed the first victory, while Robert Gallet (3-2) took the nightcap, pitching six scoreless innings.

Guilford’s Kent Peterson had four hits. John Macon Smith added three. Peterson and Corey Wallace each had a double in the nightcap. Drew Crawford (1-2) claimed the loss in game one, allowing seven earned runs in 2.2 innings. Chad Wagoner threw 5.1 innings and allowed three earned runs.

The Quakers play host to visiting conference-foe Roanoke College Wednesday, Mar. 27 at 3:00 p.m. at McBane Field.

  1. GC is 3-7 in conference, currently in 9th place out of 11 teams, Tourney only takes top 6 teams. Better pick it up,
