GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, N.C., will play host to the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship, as announced today by ACC Commissioner John Swofford.
“The ACC Baseball Championship is one of the premiere events in this league, and it’s only fitting that the City of Greensboro will add to its rich history of providing first-class experiences to our teams and fans,” said Swofford. “NewBridge Bank Park and the Greensboro Grasshoppers staff did a terrific job of hosting the 2010 and 2012 ACC Baseball Championships, and I’m sure 2014 will be just as successful.”
The 2014 ACC Baseball Championship will be held from May 20-25 and will feature a modified 10-team, double-elimination format. With Notre Dame and Pittsburgh set to compete as ACC baseball members for the 2014 season, the expanded tournament format will reflect the growth of the conference as whole.
“We are thrilled that the ACC Baseball Championship will be back in Greensboro at NewBridge Bank Park in 2014,” said Donald Moore, President of the Greensboro Grasshoppers. “This will be a great opportunity for the entire Greensboro Community to see some of the nation’s elite programs compete for an ACC Title.”
Greensboro will welcome the ACC Baseball Championship for the third time in five years. The total attendance of 52,926 for the 2012 tournament at NewBridge was the fifth-highest in the 39-year history of the event. The park’s debut as host site came in 2010, when a total of 50,266 fans (sixth-highest total ever) made their way through the turnstiles.
The Saturday night overflow crowd of 10,229 for a game between North Carolina and NC State during 2012 ACC Baseball Championship set a single-game attendance record for the tournament. It also marked a record attendance for NewBridge Bank Park and represented the largest crowd ever to watch a college baseball game in the state of North Carolina. Average attendance for the 2012 ACC Baseball Championship was 4,071.
Located in downtown Greensboro, NewBridge Bank Park opened its gates to a crowd of 8,540 on April 3, 2005 with an exhibition game between the Class A Greensboro Grasshoppers and their parent club Florida Marlins. This state-of-the-art facility features a 30′ wide, open-air concourse, 36 concession points of sale, a kid-safe play park and numerous amenities.
The stadium’s seating capacity currently stands at 7,499 which includes 5,300 chair back seats, 16 luxury suites and two grass berm and picnic areas. The stadium was constructed to meet Class AA standards with room for expansion beyond.
