Elon’s Watson Tabbed an All-American by NFCA Softball

ELON, N.C. – Elon softball’s Tomeka Watson was named a Third Team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as announced by the NFCA on Wednesday, May 29. Watson becomes the first member in program history to earn All-American laurels and is the first Elon female student-athlete to be recognized as an All-American at the Division I level.

The honor adds to a record-breaking senior season for Watson after she set new program career records in home runs, hits, RBI, runs scored and slugging percentage. The Jackson, Ga., native led the Southern Conference in five offensive categories, including batting average (.419), slugging percentage (.768), on-base percentage (.511), hits (65), total bases (116) and stolen bases (25-for-26).

She became Elon’s all-time home run leader on Feb. 24, versus Hampton with her 27th career home run. It was also her sixth straight contest with a home run, tying an NCAA Division I softball record. Watson provided the go-ahead home run in the Phoenix’s 5-2 upset at No. 8 Georgia on Feb. 8, handing the Bulldogs their first season-opening home loss since 2006.

Watson was rewarded as the SoCon’s Player of the Month in February and was twice recognized as the league’s Player of the Week. She was selected to the All-SoCon First Team at the conclusion of the season and tabbed as Elon Athletics’ Basnight Female Athlete of the Year.

In all, 54 players from 32 different institutions were selected to one of three 2013 NFCA Division I All-American teams.
