Elon’s Murphy Tabbed SoCon Women’s Soccer Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon University junior goalkeeper Kate Murphy has been named the Southern Conference’s Women’s Soccer Player of the Week, the league office announced today, Sept. 24.

Last week against Liberty and Virginia Commonwealth, Murphy tallied a combined 16 saves and a .500 goals-against average.

On Sept. 20 in a 2-0 win over Liberty, Murphy played all 90 minutes and registered five saves in a shutout over the Flames. The clean sheet marked the 15th of her career, placing her fifth all-time in Elon history.

Two days later at VCU in Richmond, Va., Murphy helped the Phoenix to a key 1-1 draw. The Sterling, Va., native tied a career-high mark with 11 saves in the tie against the Rams.

The Elon women’s soccer team opens league play at home on Thursday night at 7 p.m. against Western Carolina.
