Board Takes Action on Namings of Athletic Facilities Sept. 26, 2013
At its meeting Thursday, the Guilford County Board of Education approved naming the Western High football field after longtime coach Joe Robinson. Robinson started his Western High career when the school opened in 1968. He taught civics, history and driver’s education and served as the head football coach. The approval comes after a 14-day public comment period. The original proposal was to name Western High’s stadium after Robinson. During the public comment period, a second name was proposed for Western High’s stadium. The name “Henderson Stadium” was submitted in honor of Doug Henderson, who served as the head football coach and athletic director at Western High from 1972 to 1989. In 1977, Henderson coached the team to a 3-A State Football Championship. In 2012, he was inducted into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s Hall of Fame.
The board approved an abbreviated public comment period for the name”Henderson Stadium.” Comments will be accepted until Oct. 7 by emailing email@example.com , and the name will be discussed at the Oct. 8 board meeting. A planned recognition to honor the late Coach Robinson is scheduled for Western High’s Oct. 4 football game.
The board also voted to approve a 25-day public comment period for a proposed name for Eastern High’s football field. The name “Tommy Grayson Field” was submitted. The name honors Thomas Tucker Grayson, a former coach, teacher and mentor at Eastern Guilford High for 17 years. Comments will be accepted until Oct. 21 by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org .
