Also now available from the Orlando Sentinel on the Greensboro Day-Montverde game:
MONTVERDE — Greensboro Day of North Carolina entered the final of the Montverde Academy Invitational boys basketball tournament on a 20-game winning streak.

Before Saturday, the Bengals had not faced many teams like the host Eagles. Few have.

Ben Simmons (19 points, nine rebounds) nearly finished with a double-double as Montverde (22-1) coasted to a 78-46 victory against Greensboro Day (24-3). D’Angelo Russell added 13 points for the Eagles.

Montverde began pulling away in the second quarter, when Simmons converted two alley-oop dunks and the Eagles capitalized on fast breaks to lead 37-16 at halftime. That bulge grew to 29 points, 58-29, by the time the fourth quarter started. Crowd favorite 7-4 junior Jean Marc Koumadje had an alley-oop dunk and two blocked shots in a brief appearance as the game wound down.

“We have a really good team, really good athletes, and we were great on defense throughout the game,” Eagles coach Kevin Boyle said. “Our pressure led to a lot of easy baskets.”

Montverde will travel to Union, N.J., to face Roselle Catholic and Metuchen Saint Joseph on Feb. 15-16 in the Metro Classic tournament at Kean University.

  1. That Metro conference is something else, no gimmes. Got to bring it every night. #focusedndetermined

  2. Not a GDS fan. Not a huge freddy fan though I respect him and believe he is a great coach. That is an awesome showing for the county and the city of greensboro at that tournament. Great job GDS.

  3. Andy,
Last week in your conference standings of teams .500 or better, I saw were you left the 2-2 Lady Falcons out of the conference race…………we continue to play for respect on and off the court.

  4. If we left out the SEG girls then our bad there…A lot of people had written them off for dead, but they are for sure Alive now….For those that were at their games the past couple of days/nights, how did they do it??? Dudley is very deep and Page beat SEG last time without Paris Kea, who had 30 points in the Page Pirates loss to SEG on Friday night.

  5. When Kimbo is focused SE is a totally different team. Glad she was focused the last two games. Page and Dudley don’t score very well. SE was always the deepest team just the youngest. Whoever role players play the best will win the Metro.

  6. This was a very bad Shooting performance by dudley.not to take anything from Southeast, but dudley missed lay up after lay up….not to mention the defense was terrible. Dudley is down one of theirs senior forward with injury that they could have used in this game. But I still think they have the talent to win the conference…only time will tell

  7. SEG is down All-Conference shooting guard Senior Kara Shutt. However, the Lady Falcons are learning how to win without her. There is still a lot of ball to be played before the playoffs start. SEG has good young talent and they are pretty deep. Maybe they will peak at the right time. Road games are going to be hard win, the team that picks up a couple will win the conference. The conference tournament will be a war. I wonder who will get hot for that. It’s going to get real interesting pretty soon.
