Elon’s Lazarova Tabbed SoCon Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Going 5-1 last week in all competition last week, Barbora Lazarova of the Elon University women’s tennis team has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for matches played March 10-16.

She is the first player on the team to earn the honor this season.

Though the Phoenix went 2-1 last week, Lazarova put up a perfect 3-0 singles mark against Gardner-Webb, Davidson and Wake Forest. Against Jenny Lunde of Gardner-Webb, the junior breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 sweep on court No. 2 to help the Phoenix earn a 6-1 victory over the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

Moving to the No. 3 singles spot for the weekend matches against Davidson and Wake Forest, Lazarova against had no trouble with the Wildcats’ Nisha Crouser in a 6-1, 6-2 win on the road. The following day, the Bratislava, Slovakia, native picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Wake Forest’s Samantha Asch in Winston-Salem for Elon’s only point of the match.

Lazarova’s individual singles record this season sits at 10-1 with her only loss coming Jan. 24 at the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament against the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, Ga.

Through the last week, Lazarova and doubles partner Jordan Johnston went 2-1 from the No. 1 spot. The pair earned an 8-5 victory over Gardner-Webb, then picked up an 8-6 victory against Davidson before falling 8-7 (3) in a tightly-contested match against Wake Forest’s Xue Zhang and Kasey Gardiner.

With the nonconference portion of the schedule completed, Elon finishes out the last seven matches of the regular season in SoCon play starting Friday, March 21, against Furman. The match at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center is set for 2:30 p.m.
