Fortmann Wins Second Straight SoCon Men’s Tennis Player of the Week Award

SPARTANBURG, N.C. – Stefan Fortmann of the Elon University men’s tennis team has been awarded his second straight SoCon Player of the Week honor for all matches played March 10-16.

In 2012 and 2013 combined, the team took home a total of four SoCon Player of the Week awards—all of which went to Cameron Silverman. With Fortmann’s second straight honor, Elon has now won four Player of the Week awards in five weeks this season. It is also the most Player of the Week awards Elon has earned in one season as a member of the Southern Conference, breaking the mark of three earned in 2005 and 2007.

Silverman and Jordan Kaufman have each won the award this season with Silverman earning the conference’s first honor on Feb. 18 and Kaufman winning March 4.

Following up a week in which Fortmann went 4-0, the junior posted a 3-0 mark last week in wins over Big South opponents Winthrop and Radford.

Playing at No. 4 singles on the road against Winthrop, Fortmann earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the Eagles’ Juan Pablo Boada. Moving to No. 2 singles for the first time since Jan. 25 against Samford, Fortmann didn’t skip a beat and cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win against Radford’s Patrick O’Keefe.

In doubles competition, Fortmann and Juan Madrid defeated Winthrop’s Yuta Hirokawa and Michael Chen 8-3 to help Elon earn a critical doubles point in a 4-3 victory against the Eagles.

The Wartburg, South Africa, native is now 5-0 in his last five singles matches while he and Madrid have combined for a 5-1 mark at No. 3 doubles.

Elon returns to action Sunday, March 23, on the road against The Citadel. The match is schedule for 1 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.
