Former Guilford College Quaker and high school football coach Ron Massey passed away on Saturday at age 56

He died on Saturday in Union County and he coached high school football for many seasons in North Carolina amassing more that 200 victories and he was a graduate of our own Guilford College, on West Friendly Avenue and New Garden Road..

Ron Massey, a 1980 graduate of Guilford College began his head coaching career in 1988 at Enloe High School. After moving on to Seventy-First in the mid 1990’s, he narrowly lost to Jacksonville in the 1994 4A Eastern Finals.

He arrived on the scene at Kings Mountain in 1995 and instantly created a powerhouse and won the hearts of everyone in southern Cleveland County.

In his five seasons at Kings Mountain he attained a 48-15-2 record, and his 1997 and 1998 seasons are still considered among the best ever in Mountaineer football history.

In 2000 he made the tough decision to move on from Kings Mountain and replace Bruce Hardin at A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis. In his twelve years in Kannapolis, he would reel off nine 10-win seasons and lead the Wonders to the 2008 3AA State Championship game.

After taking a year off from football in 2011, he returned to Piedmont where he’s lead the Panthers to a 16-16 record over the past three seasons.

Massey’s total coaching record will go down as 221-101-3….Ron Massey’s Kannapolis Wonders vs. the Dudley Panthers in the 2008 State 3-AA Championship Game at Wake Forest’s BB&T Field and a game won by Dudley and the Panthers were led to the title by Ricky Lewis Jr…..
