INDIANAPOLIS — NCAA President Mark Emmert said Monday that findings from a recent investigation into academic fraud at the University of North Carolina are troubling, disturbing and shocking.

While Emmert said he would withhold final judgment until the NCAA completes its own investigation, the usually cautious former university president was downright blunt during a 20-minute interview with The Associated Press at its Indianapolis headquarters.

*****Looking back at this report, I did not expect Mr. Emmert to come out so strong, but now it makes you wonder if victories and championships might have to be vacated and if Titles might have to be returned…That is the gist you get from reading what Mr. Emmert has to say, that he will come down hard on anyone that is breaking the rules and it sounds like he might crush Florida State too, if they find out that Jameis Winston has been charging for and profiting from signed autographs….

Mr. Emmert is not messing around based upon the tone he was displaying today……*****

  1. Here is just a snippet of what Mr. Mark Emmert was saying and like the old saying goes, “there’s not much that makes me mad, but this makes me mad” and Mr. Emmert appears to be delivering based upon that statement today, of “There’s not much that makes me mad, but THIS makes me MAD”!!!!

Mr. Emmert and I’m caught off guard by how strong he has come out here early in the proceedings…

“Just based on the (Kenneth) Wainstein report, this is a case that potentially strikes at the heart of what higher education is about,” Emmert said Monday. “Universities are supposed to take absolutely most seriously the education of their students, right? I mean that’s why they exist, that’s their function in life. If the Wainstein report is accurate, then there was severe, severe compromising of all those issues, so it’s deeply troubling. … It’s absolutely disturbing that we find ourselves here right now.”

  2. The NCAA has so many of its own problems/scandals to deal with that UNC is probably not at the top of its agenda right now. But the bigger question is how does a university that was committing institutional academic fraud for years keep its accreditation? This stuff cheapens the degree of everyone who attended UNC during those years. And no, I’m not a UNC hater. I have no allegiance to any school in the bastion of mediocrity that the ACC has become.

  3. This scandal is not over with the release of the Wainstein report. Although very damning to UNC, it left quite a bit more damaging information out. More will be discovered in the future. In March Mary Willingham and Jay Smith will have their book released. The title of it is Cheated. There should be information in that book not covered by Wainstein. Willingham also has a lawsuit pending vs UNC which will bring more discovery. UNC better hope the NCAA goes ahead and nails them based on Wainstein before more information on their transgressions surface.

  4. That “C” really has a lot of people thinking and there will be much talking about this problem as we move forward.

Credibility, validity and accountability will be areas of concern…

We heard from Mr. Emmert, but have we heard from Mr. Swofford since this news broke last week???

I would be expecting a statement from the Atlantic Coast Conference office and Mr. Swofford fits tightly in here somewhere…

Much of Deborah Crowder’s work came under Mr. Swofford’s watch as the Athletic Director at UNC…

Another key word here that may end up getting passed around more, as the days and weeks go by is responsibility…

Mr. Swofford was there while so much of this was going on in his Athletic Department….At least 10-15 years worth….
