Ride/run comes to an end for the Northwest Guilford women’s basketball team:(28-1) finish and Myers Park just too tough on this day

No need to look back and no need for the Northwest Guilford girls to hold their heads down…They had a terrific run/ride and there is nothing at all to be ashamed of when you finish (28-1) and when your season ends with a loss to the Myers Park Mustangs, you just load up the shoes and head back home, knowing you gave it all that you had and you lost to a very good ball team…

Myers Park was averaging right at 70 points a game in the playoffs and today they ended up at 58 and no team before Northwest Guilford today, had scored more than 36 points on MP in the playoffs….

The Mustangs don’t just have one or two good players, they have at least 3-4 in their top five that burn you and turn you inside out….Aliyah Mazyck(Mahzeek), DD Rogers, Chanin Scott, those three can kill you in a heartbeat…58-38 was the final this afternoon and at the end of one quarter the score was 11-5 MP…

Myers Park turned up the heat in the second quarter and the Mustangs led 35-11 at halftime….NWG outscored Myers Park 17-9 in the 3rd quarter and the Vikings had cut that 24-point lead to 16 with eight minutes left in their season, but then in 4th and final quarter, the Mustangs turned up the defensive pressure again and NWG could not mount any type of comeback that would give them a chance to get the MPM(Myers Park Mustangs’) lead down to 10 points or less…

The Mustangs took off and went running again and they ran hard in the second and fourth quarters, as Mazyck ended up with 30 points for the game, while DD Rogers had 9 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks….

Interesting note on MPM from Langston Wertz Jr. at the Charlotte Observer:
Rogers and Mazyck have never lost to a Mecklenburg County team . They’ve lost to Southeast Guilford, West Forsyth and nationally ranked Blackman (Tenn) twice. Their record is 118-4 .

118-4….That’s strong….

NWG was strong this season and the Vikings finished strong….Little Lindsay Gauldin scored 4 points in the last minute of the game and the way Gauldin closed things out, that is what you want to remember about Northwest Guilford’s season….Playing hard to the last whistle….Little Lindsay was taking it to the MPM(Myers Park Mustangs) reserves and Little Lindsay was playing hard to the last whistle and that is what you like to see and that is what you want to remember….

Hard fought season for NWG and we will remember the Gauldin close of today’s game and freshman Bria Gibbs was in there at the end getting a two-point bucket and she was doing with just one good line/eye of vision…She lost a contact lens early in the game and she didn’t have a backup, but she still came in and found a way to finish strong and get that basket in the last stages of the game and that says a lot about the Gibbs-like effort…

We will remember this being a very good year for NWG and we will have remaining energy from how Little Lindsay closed it all out today and lots of fun and good memories of this team….

Hayley Barber had great year and she will back for her senior season…We will remember Hayley and that mouthpiece she wore, can still see it vividly, it was almost like it was her best friend….Morgan Pointer, junior, will be back for her senior season and Morgan has one of the sweetest three-point shots that you will ever see…Smooth high arching shot…Toni Tucker, another junior, will be back next year and she has one of the best left hands in the business and that left-handed shot can be lethal/deadly from three-point range or on the base-line….Toni is not just some PTP(Part-time Player), she has the PGP to along with her game too….Catherine Moore is one of the more deliberate players that you will see with her dribble and her shot technique and Catherine also returns for 2015/2016….When you think about Savannah Neas the first thing that comes to your mind is the three-point shot, but another thing that came into play here late in the season was her tough defense…Played super defense and she was going after shots in the Title Game and she was getting quite a few of them with her “D”…And I saw her drive up one day at Northwest in her truck and I won’t forget that truck(BIG) for a long either…Neas is back for 2015/2016….

There’s a five for you right there and that includes four guards and one big in Morgan Pointer….NWG may want to go with Pointer and Gibbs down low next season and continue on with their guard rotation that they have been using…Gibbs and Gauldin, this year’s freshmen, will have to play big parts in next year’s efforts by the Vikings…

NWG will surely miss Hunter Newman and Leah Wallace, their two key seniors….Newman did so many things that did not show up in the box score or on the stat sheet…Newman was a team leader and NWG will miss that leadership next season…Wallace was a very good defender and she could get you key points quickly, she seemed to have a good knack for getting the ball in the bucket in a hurry when it was necessary…Hunter was a pro at going after those loose balls and there is no telling how many held balls she was able to create this season with her sheer hustle….We only have one jump ball in a basketball game unless we go into an overtime period, the rest of the tie-ups are held balls and not jump balls, I keep on telling people that, but they won’t listen..Qyashia Griffin was another Viking senior and she did not play a lot, but she was still a big part of this team and when she was on the court, the ball was in good hands and I heard that….

This Northwest Guilford bunch was a very good team and I hope you are listening now….We talked about Barber, Pointer, Tucker, Moore, Neas, Gibbs and Gauldin and those are your key returning players and that gives you a seven-deep rotation to build from and you also have Mikayla Harkey and Sandra Womack plus others that can help…I remember Wommack from somewhere from over the years, it may be from one of the Middle Schools….That is 9 players that you can look to for next year and as always, there are otherS that I am leaving out, we always make that mistake…

I am just waiting for NWG principal Ralph Kitley’s daughter to get up with this varsity team…She might just be at Northwest Middle School this year or maybe on the NWG girls JV team, but please do take my word for it, this kid is going to be a keeper and not a goalkeeper, but she may end as a goal sweeper, sweeping away would-be scorers shots with her shot-blocking/rejecting abilities….

Coach Joyner, assistant coach Long, assistant coach Joyner and the other Northwest leaders have lot to look forward to as they head toward next season….

Our Guilford County teams are done/finished for this season, but in the end the Northwest Guilford girls lasted longer than any other GCS team in 2014/2015 and they deserve a BIG Congratulations on their outstanding season….For them it was (28-1) and looks like the fun has just begun and by the looks of those smiles on Hayley Barber’s face this year,(when the mouthpiece was out), she is not going to stop smiling until the final victory has been won and she wants her team to return right back where they were this year one year from now and she wants those Vikings to be cutting down the nets on this same Saturday in 2016 and then you will see a smile like you have never seen before….

Good job Vikings and good night and a good season from all our teams in Guilford CountyHad to make this post a little longer than the others, because our high basketball season is complete….
