Elon Volleyball Welcomes Wildcats for Tuesday Match

ELON, N.C. – The Elon volleyball team (1-6) closes out its current home stand when it hosts former Southern Conference opponent Davidson (3-3) on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 8 p.m. in Alumni Gym.

A Look at the Phoenix
Elon went 1-2 over the weekend in the Elon Phoenix Classic. The maroon and gold posted its first win with a sweep of North Carolina Central on Saturday. In the match, Megan Gravley hit .407 with 12 kills, while Ebony Scott hit .409 with 11 kills. Sydel Curry recorded a new three-set match career high with 32 assists to average an impressive 10.6 assists per set. The Elon defense has out-blocked its opponent in its last four matches thanks in part to Catherine Head who posted 23 total blocks last week to average 1.44 blocks per set.

Scouting the Wildcats
After starting the season 0-3, Davidson claimed three straight wins last weekend to win the Wildcat Classic. The Wildcats posted sweeps over Hampton and Presbyterian before a 3-2 victory against East Carolina. Mason Rooney has recorded 52 kills for Davidson this season with only seven errors and is hitting .417, while also averaging 4.14 assists per set. On defense, the Wildcats are led by Mary Harriet Moore who has posted 18 total blocks to average 1.2 blocks per set. Davidson is currently out-blocking its opponents 47-28.

Elon vs. Davidson
Tuesday marks the 22nd all-time meeting between the Phoenix and the Wildcats and the first since both teams left the SoCon. Davidson leads the series by one, 11-10, and won the last match in 2013 with Elon winning the four previous meetings.

Elon head coach Mary Tendler is in her 13th season with the Phoenix program. She enters Tuesday’s match with a 192-207 Elon and career coaching record.

Looking Ahead
Elon travels to Valparaiso, Ind., this weekend for the Popcorn Classic. The Phoenix faces Loyola and host Valpo on Friday, Sept. 11, before taking on Kennesaw State and Savannah State on Saturday, Sept. 12.
