College Softball Finals – Guilford 8–11, Mary Baldwin 0–0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Brooks Bray (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) hit four-for-six with an inside-the-park home run as the Quakers claimed a sweep of a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader with Mary Baldwin College. The Quakers took game one, 8-0, in six innings, while claiming the nightcap, 11-0, in five innings.

The Quakers posted a run in the second and fifth innings, including Bray’s inside-the-park home run in the fifth, as Guilford held a tight lead for the majority of the contest. The Quakers used a big inning in the sixth to close the contest with Guilford producing six hits in the six-run sixth inning. Calli Pastor began the inning with a single and was driven home two at-bats later when Savannah Yale cleared the bases with a one-out double. Pastor concluded the contest with a hit-by-pitch for the final run to close the contest.

Mary Baldwin attempted a rally to start game two as the Fighting Squirrels placed runners in scoring position with no outs in the top of the first frame. Morgan Tully grounded into a fielder’s choice that induced a tag at home plate and a throw to second base to catch Chrissy Cromer in an effort to get back to second base. Game-two starter Maggie Shaffer recovered and struck out the next batter to retire the side. Guilford responded with a run in each of their first two innings up to bat, but the Quakers created separation from the Fighting Squirrels in the third inning. Makayla Carver’s bases-clearing triple with one out bolstered the Quakers in the frame, posting seven runs. A Jordan Starke home run in the fourth inning provided insurance as the Quakers cruised to victory.

Bray totaled two RBI and hit three-for-three in game one on her four-hit afternoon. Taylor Boyd produced two multi-hit efforts in her four-for-seven afternoon with one RBI. Caroline Barnette finished the afternoon three-for-seven with a game-one triple and one RBI.

Montana Welcher was the lone Fighting Squirrels’ bat with a multi-hit game-one effort, batting two-for-three. Alli Bascunan and Kate Dickinson boasted multi-hit efforts in game two, both batting two-for-two.

Courtney Lackey (3-0) struck out five batters and walked two in a complete-game three-hit effort in game one. Maggie Shaffer (3-0) struck out two and walked two in a four-inning game-two effort where she gave up five hits before being relieved by Rebekah Langston in the final inning, who retired the side.

Janie Brothers (1-1) took the complete-game loss in game one, striking out two batters and walking one. Dickinson (0-1) took the loss in game two in a three-inning effort before Olivia Compton relieved her in the fourth, striking out three batters.

The Quakers (7-1) travel to Averett University Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
