GREENSBORO, N.C. – Phil Kyger scored four goals and an assist in Elizabethtown College’s 12-4 lacrosse win at Guilford College Wednesday. Teammate Joe Clark added two goals and four assists for the visiting Blue Jays (3-1).
Elizabethtown scored the game’s first six goals before Adam Fiore got the Quakers on the board with the first of his two goals on the day. Elizabethtown’s Clark scored twice and set up two Kyger tallies during the game-opening run. Dan Bednarik’s unassisted goal 6:40 before halftime gave the guests a 7-1 edge at the break.
Kyger netted the second half’s first two goals, which opened a 9-1 edge. Guilford got a goal back when longstick midfielder David Felipe picked up the ground ball off a face-off, carried it to the offensive zone and rocketed his first goal of the season into the goal. Felipe’s score made it a 9-2 game with 3:36 left in the third.
The Blue Jays did not allow a Quakers’ comeback as rookie goalie Brandon Calle turned away eight shots in 57 minutes of work, including six in the second half. Elizabethtown also successfully killed off all four of the Quakers’ extra-man opportunities. Fiore and Zachary Berkowitz scored for the hosts in the final five minutes to account for the game’s final margin.
Kyger and Clark were the Blue Jays’ lone multiple-point scorers. Defender Mike Tangredi was solid with five ground balls and four caused turnovers, both game highs.
Fiore’s two goals paced the Quakers’ offense. Connor Manning won 9-of-13 face-offs for the Quakers and collected four ground balls. He shared team-high honors with Andrew McDonagh. Styles finished with 10 saves in goal
The Quakers host Christopher Newport University Saturday (3/5) at 1:00 p.m.
