College Women’s Tennis Final – Guilford 5, Virginia Wesleyan 4

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Guilford College senior Luci Gordon won a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Virginia Wesleyan College’s Sam Jackson at sixth singles to give the visiting Quakers a 5-4 comeback tennis win over the host Marlins Sunday.

Guilford (2-2, 2-1 ODAC) took a 2-1 edge after winning two doubles matches. Gordon and Nora Prokosch downed the Marlins’ Jackson and Francesca Lanuza, 8-1, at third doubles. The Quakers’ top tandem of Katie Claggett and Riley Caruana defeated Mia Proctor and Kellen Phillips, 8-5.

Virginia Wesleyan surged ahead by winning the top three singles flights in straight sets. The bottom half of the ladder belonged to Guilford, however, as Fernanda Gonzalez and Leigh Fishman registered 6-0, 6-0 victories at fourth- and fifth-singles, respectively.

The win helped coach Dave McCain’s team win two of three matches this weekend in their first league contests of the year. The Quakers are back in action March 11 against visiting Averett University at 2:00 p.m.
