Three Phoenix Earn All-Conference Honors

RICHMOND, Va. – The Colonial Athletic Association announced its women’s basketball postseason honors today, March 8, with three Elon women’s basketball players earning spots on the various all-conference teams. Shay Burnett was named to the All-CAA First Team, while Lauren Brown and Autumn Carter were selected to the CAA All-Academic Team.

Burnett earns first team honors after being named to the CAA All-Rookie Team last year. The sophomore leads the Phoenix in scoring and in rebounds, averaging 13.0 points and 7.9 boards per game, and ranks 10th and seventh in the conference, respectively. She also ranks fourth in the league in free throw percentage (81.1 percent) and defensive rebounds (5.2/game) and is in the top 10 in assists (3.5 game) and offensive rebounds (2.6/game). The Graham, N.C., native has tallied nine double-doubles this season, including one near triple-double (28 points, 15 rebounds, nine assists). She has scored in double figures in 22 games, posting 20+ scoring games twice, and has 11 games with 10 or more rebounds. Burnett is the youngest player to earn first-team honors this season and one of only two sophomores to receive a spot on any of the three All-CAA teams.

Brown and Carter represent two of the 15 players that make up the 2015-16 CAA Women’s Basketball All-Academic Team. Brown, an exercise science major, earns all-academic honors for the second straight year. The junior averages 9.2 points per game and leads the team with 46 threes on the year and a 29 three-point field goal percentage. The Alpharetta, Ga., native tallied a career-high 18 points in Elon’s first ever victory against NC State on Dec. 13, earning CAA Player of the Week honors, and hauled down a career-high eight rebounds against College of Charleston on Jan. 22.

Carter, a senior elementary education major, receives all-academic honors for the first time. The Reidsville, N.C., native has come on strong for the Phoenix this season, posting her first career double-double at CofC on Feb. 19 and a season-high 17 points off a 7-of-9 FG performance in the regular-season finale at William & Mary on March 2.

The 2016 CAA Women’s Basketball Championship is set for March 9-12 at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md. The first round and the quarterfinal rounds will air exclusively on CAA.tv, while Friday’s semifinals and Saturday’s championship game will air live on Comcast SportsNet.
