College Women’s Tennis News – Guilford’s Gonzalez Named ODAC Player of the Week

FOREST, Va. – Guilford College senior Fernanda Gonzalez (Siler City, N.C./Jordan-Matthews) won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s (ODAC) Women’s Tennis Player of the Week Award Monday. She is the Quakers’ first winner of the league’s weekly prize this year and first-time honoree in her career.

Gonzalez won all four of her matches in Guilford’s 2-0 week last week, which helped the Quakers (4-2, 3-1 ODAC) extend their winning streak to three. She won in straight-sets at fourth singles over Averett University’s Olivia Scott and teamed with Leigh Fishman to take an 8-6 triumph over the Cougars’ second-doubles tandem. Gonzalez’s two victories helped Guilford down the visitors, 5-4. A day later, she helped the visiting Quakers to a 6-3 ODAC win at league-rival Shenandoah University. Gonzalez and Fishman took an 8-5 second-doubles decision over the Hornets’ Amy Rapp and Denise Vollmar. Gonzalez won her third-singles match, 6-0, 6-0, over Shenandoah’s Kelsey Neely.

Gonzalez has a team-best 4-1 singles record, playing mostly in the number-four slot. She and Fishman are 2-4 at second doubles. Gonzalez’s six overall victories (singles and doubles) rank second on the team.

Coach Dave McCain’s Quakers host league rivals Lynchburg College (3/19) and Roanoke College (3/20) this weekend.
