Elon Track & Field Phoenix Starts Outdoor Season in Myrtle Beach

ELON, N.C. – Coming off a record breaking and highly successful indoor season, the Elon University women’s track and field team transitions to the outdoor season as the Phoenix treks to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational on March 18-19.

Indoor Recap

The Phoenix concluded the indoor season at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on March 4-5 in Boston. Elon finished the meet tied for 11th overall – a 10-spot improvement from last year – and tallied 21 total points at the meet.

Emily Dixon earned a runner-up finish at ECACs in the pentathlon as the Bath, England, native racked up a personal-best 3,688 points during the multi-events scoring eight points for the Phoenix. That performance ranked her second on the pentathlon list in school history.

Elon also saw a few of its athletes set new indoor school records and personal bests at the ECAC Championships. The 4×400-meter relay team of Desiree Ross, Lauren Brzozowski, Lydia Laws and Jen Esposito set a new school record in the event with a time of 3:43.91 and was sixth overall. Sydney Griffin also set a new school-record in the indoor 200-meters with a time of 24.28. Esposito established a new standard in the 400-meters with a 54.61.

New personal-bests were also set in a few other events. Tereza Novotna ran a 9:35.10 in the 3,000-meters and is second on the school’s all-time indoor list. Carrie Abraham set new personal-records in both the triple and long jumps with marks of 12.10m and 5.85m, respectively. Both distances are second all time on the program’s respective indoor list.

Outdoor Prelims

• The Phoenix will bring 29 athletes to the Shamrock Invitational this weekend. Elon will be very well represented in nearly every event.

• The Shamrock Invitational will include over 1,300 athletes representing 38 collegiate teams and clubs from around the country including Tennessee, South Carolina, Clemson, Purdue, North Dakota, and Albany.

• Elon will look to defend its 2015 Colonial Athletic Association Outdoor Championship this season on its home track as the Phoenix hosts the 2016 CAA Outdoor Championships on May 6-7.

• The maroon and gold earned its first-ever conference title and Elon University’s first team championship in the CAA with its win at last year’s league championships.

• The Phoenix returns five individuals that earned CAA event championships last season in Emily Dixon (heptathlon), Jen Esposito (400-meter hurdles), Bryanna Hames (discus), Kimberly Johansen (800 and 1,500-meters) and Tereza Novotna (3,000-meter steeplechase).

• Johansen was the CAA Track Athlete of the Meet at the league championships after the Chelmsford, England, native set a new CAA outdoor record in the 1,500-meters with a time of 4:22.82.
