  1. Interesting note: Eastern Guilford, Dudley, Southern Guilford and NE Guilford are #s 3 through 6. They all play each other in the same Easter tourney. Should be a great tourney.

  2. Even more interesting with next year’s realignment… 3 of the 4A conference teams on bottom.

  3. Mike’s post reminds me of an interesting conversation I had years ago with Coach Calihan. We were talking baseball of course and he said SEG was better off as a 4A school than 3A from a baseball prospective. And who knows why Grimsley with its size can only be competitive in swimming and tennis.

  4. You do remember NW beat Grimsley 22-2.
You do remember SE handled Glenn and Glenn beat HPC.

  5. You have to look at the full body of work and the teams that they are playing today..

I have seen NWG three times and the Grimsley game still leaves me scratching my head because I have seen Grimsley three times and don’t see how they lost to NWG like that…

Grimsley is a much better team than that score would show and I just saw HPCA vs. Dudley on Wednesday and their young men(HPCA) look like grown men….Their two pitchers are around 6’3 and 6’4 and they can bring it…

If they played today you would have to make HPCA the clear cut favorite over a team like SEG….SEG’s top pitcher is on the shelf for at least 10 days and maybe two weeks or more and HPCA is built a lot like last year’s Wesleyan team and SEG could not defeat WES when they played..

I may be off slightly on a couple of things but for the past three weeks I have seen high school baseball games and I did my research/homework…

You will see major changes in a poll like this when some of the teams get deeper into their conference play and when some get back to .500…

NWG at DH Conley tomorrow and that will be another good test…I saw NWG vs. Richmond County last Friday night and that did not look good for NWG….

I need to see teams like Eastern and Southern, but most of the other most teams, I have seen them all…

  6. Grimsley higher than NW….lost 22-2 when they played….LOL.

For sure, NW played poorly against Richmond Co (6-1 record) and Randleman (5-2 record)…they lost 7-2 and 12-2 (not 22-2).

Check the records of the teams that Grimsley has beaten (Wheatmore, W Guilford, Williams, Ragsdale). Never mind, I’ll save you the trouble…their cumulative record is 4-23, according to MaxPreps. The best of those is Wheatmore, at 2-6, and one of their wins was against…..Grimsley (they’ve played twice).

It’s hard for the fan of a team with a 2-5 record to say much, but c’mon man. To have Grimsley higher than NW is laughable.

  7. You have to have SE 7-0 ahead of HPCA for two obvious reasons. Need I say more… Glenn? come on man, I don’t care how hard they throw!! Btw, they barely beat a Dudley team who has been dominated by SE and may finish 3rd in that conf!

  8. Gyspie Mike,

How can you sit here and talk about past years between Dudley and SE. Had the pleasure of watching the game last year at SE and they by no means dominated Dudley.

  9. @Fan,
    You asked for it.
Since 2010 SE is 12-0 with the average game score of 8-1. Just last year it was 15-5
Don’t know what game you are watching! Btw, this was not meant to pick on Dudley.. I wanna make that clear. I was simply making a point about JPCA. SE has the best staff around, that’s a huge difference.

  10. Andy thank u for your time and effort u put into this website and your opinions. Just like in life , not everyone is going to agree. No different than having a top 25 baseball , basketball , football poll. Andy has made his judgements based on what he has seen with his eyes and I’m sure others that work closely with him. I think some teams maybe ranked too high or not high enough . That’s my opinion and that’s ok folks. I’d say that the polls are pretty accurate and without schools being able to play one another it’s tough. Also remember in baseball it doesn’t take but one inning to have a bad night and that’s just part of the game. I’d say your combined poll is very good. It all will play out. My advice to readers is enjoy the information and try not to get all bent out shape over it. Keep up the good work!!

  11. Hate to bust your bubble about SE having best staff around- assuming your speaking of pitching staffs.. HPCA runs 3 starters out there that all throw 90+ with great stuff. They all are D1 pitchers and one only a senior who will probably get drafted. These guys are the best around -not just in our area – but in the country. High School staffs with that stuff is unheard of and they have 4 relievers that would be big game starters for other teams. Do your homework! Only one way to find out and that’s to play – but being that SE wouldn’t schedule in off season they won’t add a game now , I’m sure.

  12. @Fan,
Talking about Coaching staff. Bragging about your team when you have an open door policy is laughable! How many public schools played HPCA in basketball? What I thought! What part of this are you not picking up on? Take your all star team and compare them to APWU, 2 public high schools (SE and Page) who won the World Series HPCA would get smacked down!! 6 kids hitting 90 with 5 ACC players! and yes, I was at the HPCA/Dudley game, as well as the Palomino World Series and 35 years of coaching/playing. Homework? Check!

  13. Wow – your resume is very impressive! If public schools don’t want to play Hp or Wesleyan then that’s your decision – I’m sure they would be more than happy to come down 421 and play. What u got to lose. Anyway this could go on forever but bottom line is don’t be hater because of talented kids. Not sure what u mean by SE-Page team but thats not a whole to brag about. My conversation on this topic is over. Come on over to HP when u want to play some good baseball

  14. You private school guys are clowns. Give me the opportunity to recruit and I win the state championship every year. Play with the kids that are in your district and coach them up then talk about coaching staffs.

  15. If you don’t know about A.P.W.U. Pretty sure you can’t talk about evaluating talent!

  16. @ Big Mike Clearly you know nothing about private schools except you are afraid to play them. There are so many more reasons to go to a private school then sports but of course you would not know that. I promise you we are preparing our kids at Wesleyan for the next chapter in their lives and it’s not for athletics.

  17. Hey guys for all u baseball folks that don’t know about the APWU…
It’s the American Postal Workers Union! Every baseball genius like Gypsie knows this! Apparently you r upset because your kid wasn’t good enough to play anywhere but a public school? Not sure why else u would have so much antimosity towards private school kids? They r kids just like yours who put there pants on one leg at a time as every other human in America does ! Please explain to everyone on here why u have such a problem with a teenage athlete that try’s to better himself or herself as a person and not just an athlete! Go visit a private school and see for yourself! How about talking a poll on your SE team and see how many of them inquired and visited G’day, Wesleyan , HP and other private schools because they wanted out of SE! U would be surprised how many starters on your team wanted to transfer! Just saying ! One
Of them is playing a really big role on your team right now!

  18. HPCA is not even in the top 10 in the state of NC, private or public. If they are so good, why not Nationally ranked, or better yet- undefeated? and btw, bringing up certain kids is such a low blow! Grow up!!

  19. @Fan @All the Mikes,
Let’s just agree that SE is the best public team in Guilford co. (for the past 30 years or so) and HPCA and HPW are up and coming. We are talking about apples and oranges. The talent in this area, as well as the state, is getting up there with the Texas, FL and California teams. Good luck to all these young men and women.Go out and show some support, even but a dog or two

  20. Let public schools recruit and see what happens. (Which I’m glad they don’t bc I’m against it) Private schools would be In trouble for athletes and you would have one or two public schools that would be dominant. One main reason a lot of good programs like SE don’t play private schools is bc they don’t want other coaches and schools trying to recruit players away from their home high school. To be honest it’s not the private school coaches fault they are allowed to recruit so why would you not. I do find it hard to believe that starters from SE would want to leave. A Starting position on one of Guilford counties most successful programs I dont see them wanting to leave. They are not the most talented team but if you look at history their records say it all. I can see where a kid might want to leave bc he has a 3 or 4 year starter in front of him maybe that’s true. There is no way you can compare private and public in any poll or standings. HPCA Weslyan they all play schools that possibly have middle schoolers playing against them and yes they do turn around and play a team full of D1 players (which were all recruited to come play at their private school). Prime example Vandalia vs Weslyan, Vandalia has 7th graders on varsity. Here’s another example of how these schools recruit and take players away from public schools. SE played HPCA JV in a Hi-Toms classic. SE beat them bad. If that same HPCA team stayed with just those players and built a program with those guys from JV they would be well below .500 each year. But wait we will go out and get some good players and recruit and be able to compete. If we put a poll out or standings it has to be a poll of teams that are all on the same playing field of rules.

  21. Not quite accurate there Gypsy Mike–APWU picked up Scooter Brookshire and Michael Holmes for their WS run. They were good and fun to watch for sure. I have seen a lot in over 50 years of coaching mysely, so congratulations on 35 years of coaching. I do agree with your comments about an “open door” policy. There is no way to compare to public schools, especially when they are providing all the players for these people to brag about. LOL.

  22. @Eddie Willis, You are right about Holmes and Brookshire. Holmes was a Sophomore in college at Wake Forrest and was the 3rd best pitcher on that team (90% 17yr old kids). I can remember sitting in the stands listening to some of the parents talking about other teams and the amount of kids they picked up-for example, N.Alleghany picked up 2 additional kids from the team they beat in the Zone finals. I guess my point is this, you got to have the right nucleus to be on the level APWU was at.. those kids had the perfect mix of talent and heart. Good times for sure!

  23. NW is behind Grimsley because they’ve only won 2 Dang Games. Grimsley has double the wins even though they lost a head to head. I don’t care if they lost by 100. If you only have 2 wins I would focus on something other than standings in some make believe poll. Nw is really bad and their delusional Fans think their the best. You guys a freaking hilarious! l’m Just Sayin!!!

  24. Oh and btw,

Public/private ALL Public schools recruit! Every single coach in Guilford County talks to parents that want to move their kids so quit acting like private schools have this ability to go offer kids like a D1 college does. NW Northern Page and Dudley go after kids harder than any private school then they’re fans our complaining about it more than anyone. Just shut up already cause your team is getting beat

  25. @Just Sayin, I haven’t talked to any NW fans that think they’re “the best”, and I certainly don’t think that myself. All NW fans that I know are painfully aware of the team’s performance to date.

I do believe that, given the teams listed in the poll, NW is more deserving of being #8 than #9. I hardly consider that delusional. Like I said in my first comment, it’s hard for the fan of a 2-5 team (now 2-6) to say much.

I’ve just taken a little time to objectively look at the teams’ respective competition and results. Given that, and the lopsided head to head, I just don’t see how Grimsley can be ranked higher. That’s my opinion.

You say that NW is “really bad”, but they beat Grimsley by 20 and W Forsyth (7-2) by 11. Three of their losses have been by 1 run, with 2 of those games in extra innings and in the third, the winning run was scored in the bottom 7th.

Do you have any facts, other than overall W-L, that would support Grimsley’s higher ranking? Or, you just think overall W-L is what polls should be based on?

  26. I don’t disagree that NW should be above Grimsley but it really doesn’t matter. Being 8th or 9th in thst poll isn’t good whatsoever. Also like Andy said…that poll will change as the season progresses.

As for the private school vs. public school debate is concerned those kids that transfer in during their junior or senior years aren’t there for education and you are kidding yourself if you believe that. Most change schools to reclass or play for a better team depending on the public school they attend. To each its own in terms of where you want to send your kids to school but don’t label those one year transfers as an educational move (that goes for public or private school kids).

  27. That APWU team DESTROYS ANY public or private school today….period…..END OF STORY….coached high school baseball for the past 10 or so years and played in the area during that time….even faced the staff of that APWU team on several occasions….Sells, Horney, Swofford, Frye, Hammond, etc. and picking up Brookshire and Holmes made them A LOT better for sure….baseball in Guilford County and surrounding area (Rockingham, Forsyth, Randolph Counties specifically) was FAR better then than it is now….
