GREENSBORO, N.C. – Shenandoah University’s John Wilt totaled six RBI over Saturday afternoon’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader as Guilford College dropped a pair of contests to Shenandoah. The Hornets claimed game one, 8-1, while fighting off a Guilford rally in the nightcap, 8-7, in ten innings.
Guilford (11-11, 2-5 ODAC) held Shenandoah (13-4, 3-2 ODAC) to just a one-run rally in the top of the first inning of game one by inducing a double play after Shenandoah rallied with one out in the frame. The Hornets posted three runs in the third inning as Tristan Baker and Dan Cameron produced singles to extend the lead. The Quakers responded one-half inning later with a two-out single from Josh Shepherd to put the Quakers on the board. The Quakers fended off two Hornets rallies in the fourth and fifth innings, where Shenandoah stranded two runners, with runners in scoring position in the fifth frame. Wilt provided insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning with a three-run inside-the-park home run to cap a four-run rally in the inning and extend the lead.
The Quakers responded to a Shenandoah one-run rally in the second inning of game two with a four-run rally in the fourth frame, capped by Jacob Roberts’ infield single in an inning where the Quakers amassed four runs and scored a run on four consecutive at-bats. The Hornets responded with a three-run rally one half-inning later as Baker and Wilt drove in Shenandoah’s three runs all with two outs. Andrew Brann responded a half-inning later with a triple with no outs in the second at-bat of the inning to reclaim the lead. Wilt and Abel Arocho responded to drive in three runs in the top of the seventh inning to claim a two run lead. The Quakers rallied in the bottom of the eighth with runners in scoring position and two outs when Roberts drove home two runs on a single to tie the game. A Jake Loew lead-off double in the top of the tenth followed by an error helped to drive in a run to give the lead back to Shenandoah. The Quakers placed the game-tying run on third base with two outs in the bottom half of the inning, but the Quakers were retired one at-bat later to claim the win.
Roberts finished five-for-ten with three RBI, all in game two, adding a double. He was the lone Quakers’ bat with two multi-hit efforts on the afternoon. Brann finished four-for-nine with a triple and one RBI.
Wilt led Shenandoah’s bats, hitting five-for-ten over the afternoon with four RBI and two doubles to add to his inside-the-park home run. Arocho finished four-for-nine with three RBI.
Parks Smithey (1-4) claimed the game-one loss for the Quakers in a seven-inning effort, striking out six and walking three while giving up four (one unearned) runs on nine hits. Chase Shuford (1-2) claimed the loss in game two in a three and two-third innings relief effort where he struck out two and walked one while giving up two runs (one unearned) on five hits.
Darrell Thompson (3-1) took the game-one win for Shenandoah in a seven and two-third innings effort where struck out three and walked one while giving up one run on six hits. Phil Morse (2-0) claimed the game-two win throwing the final two and two-third innings and giving up just two hits.
The Quakers continue their homestand Monday, hosting Tufts University in a 3 p.m. contest.
