Elon Track and Field Competes on Opening Day at Shamrock Invitational

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team opened its 2016 outdoor season at the Shamrock Invitational on Friday, March 18, at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

Elon’s Chelsea Smith was second overall in the 800-meters with her time of 2:18.16. Teammate Alicia DeCastro was 11th in the race with a 2:24.90. The Phoenix’s 4×800-meter relay of Coralea Geraniotis, Kimberly Johansen, Kaitlin Snapp and Emma Brown earned a seventh-place standing with a time of 9:34.07 – the third-best time in school history.

The Phoenix’s 4×200-meter team of Desiree Ross, Lauren Brzozowski, Katie Arbogast and Sydney Griffin had the second-best time in school history as the quartet finished with a 1:39.76 and was ninth overall.

Griffin later qualified for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles as she finished second in the race with a qualified time of 13.92, second overall. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Elon took the top two spots with Carolyn Hopkins taking medalist honors with her time of 11:16.43. Corey Weiss was second at her time of 11:29.06.

Megan Kirschling was sixth in the seeded high jump after clearing the bar at 5’ 5” (1.65m). Carrie Abraham had a leap of 17’ 4.75” (5.30m) in the seeded long jump for Elon.

The Phoenix concludes the meet tomorrow, March 19, with the field events starting at 9 a.m. and the track events starting at 10 a.m.
