HPU’s Spaulding returns with javelin victory at Wake

• Senior Christian Spaulding broke his own school record while winning the javelin title (68.75m, 225-6)
• Junior Drew Francoeur set a new collegiate best by close to 10 meters and finished second in the javelin (63.16m, 206-3).
• Senior Dennis Crawford qualified for the 110 hurdles and finished fourth with his best time in close to two years (14.40 seconds)

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After redshirting during the 2015 outdoor season, senior thrower Christian Spaulding returned with a bang Friday, capturing the javelin title with a school record mark at the Wake Forest Open.

Spaulding registered an excellent mark of 68.75 (225-6) in his first collegiate throw since 2014. The 68.75m throw surpassed his previous school record of 68.19m set on March 14, 2014, at the Coastal Carolina Invitational.

In addition to Spaulding’s supreme throw, junior Drew Francoeur returned after sitting out 2015 and challenged Spaulding in the event, finishing second with a mark of 63.16m (207-3). The throw surpassed his previous collegiate best (set in 2014) by close to 10 meters.

Senior Austin Miller put together a solid outdoor debut in the pole vault after winning the indoor Big South title in 2016. Miller posted a vault of 4.99m (16-4.5) to finish third. Sophomore Todd Uckermark placed sixth with a vault of 4.69m (15-4.5).

On the jumps circuit, senior Will Narramore placed fourth in the triple jump with an outdoor collegiate best mark (non-wind aided) of 14.62m (47-11.75).

On the track, senior Dennis Crawford qualified for the finals of the 110m hurdles and finished fourth in 14.40 seconds, his best time in close to two years in the event.

In the preliminaries of the 100m dash, 2015 Big South outdoor champion James House finished 11th (10.77 seconds) and senior Andrew Kuras was 35th in 11.23 seconds. Senior Narramore placed 39th in 11.29 seconds.

In other throws action, senior Jim Wilson finished 17th in the shot put with a solid mark of 14.64m (48-0.5) while freshman Britton Mann made his outdoor debut with a throw of 13.29m (43-7-0.25). Mann also finished 24th in the hammer throw with a mark of 39.57m (129-10).

High Point wraps up competition at the Wake Forest Open Saturday at Kentner Stadium.
