Elon Women’s Tennis Heads to Charleston for Matchup Against the Cougars

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team faces off against the College of Charleston on Monday, March 21, for its only match of the week. The match at the College of Charleston Tennis Center will begin at 2 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
The Phoenix (6-9) earned the all-important doubles point, and Erica Braschi clinched the victory in singles action as Elon defeated Charlotte 5-2 on Friday, March 18, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

BRASCHI ON A ROLL
Erica Braschi leads the team with nine singles wins this season. She is currently on a five-match winning streak in singles play after earning the clinching point in Elon’s win over Charlotte on Friday. The sophomore has played primarily at No. 2 singles, but saw action at No. 1 in a win against N.C. Central.

SCOUTING CHARLESTON
The Cougars are 12-7 overall this season. College of Charleston has lost three of its last four matches. The team’s most recent victory came on March 15 in a 7-0 sweep of Savannah State. Mara Argyriou leads the Cougars in singles play with a 14-4 overall record in dual singles matches.

SERIES HISTORY
The College of Charleston Cougars lead the all-time series 16-1 against the Phoenix and it will be the 18th meeting since Elon joined Division I. The teams met twelve times while both programs were members of the Southern Conference.

Last season, the Cougars defeated the Phoenix 4-3 during the regular season on April 10, 2015. Elon also faced Charleston in the 2015 CAA Women’s Tennis Championships, falling in the semifinals, 4-1. Elon’s lone victory against the Cougars was a 5-2 win on March 27, 2013 in Charleston.

UP NEXT
Elon returns home on Thursday, March 31, to host the Delaware at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The matchup will begin at 2 p.m.

HEAD COACH ELIZABETH ANDERSON
Elizabeth Anderson is in her 12th season as head coach of the Phoenix. Anderson has led Elon to four straight seasons of 15 or more wins and guided the program to its first NCAA Tournament in 2014.

2016 CAA TOURNAMENT
Elon was selected to host the 2016 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships, which will be held April 21-24 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and the Burlington Tennis Center. It will mark the first-ever CAA Tournament hosted by the Phoenix and first conference tournament hosted by the program since the 2013 SoCon Tournament.
