College Softball Finals – Guilford 3–6, Randolph 0–10

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Casey Snead threw a one-hitter in game one of Saturday afternoon’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader against Randolph College where the Quakers claimed game one, 3-0. Jessica Nowak’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning of game two pulled Randolph ahead as the WildCats claimed the nightcap, 10-6.

Both sides cruised through the first three innings of game one as each pitcher only faced one batter over the minimum. After two quick outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Brooks Bray (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) broke the ice, blasting a home run to left field for her second home run of the season. Guilford starting pitcher Casey Snead continued to face only one more than the minimum amount of batters through five innings when she produced a two-out RBI single with the bases loaded after a Randolph pitching switch to cushion the Guilford lead. After Nowak drew a lead-off walk to start the top of the seventh frame, Snead struck out Dianne Davis and induced a ground out to pinch-hitter Lauren Morris to end the game.

Randolph jumped to an early lead in the first inning of game two with a Ki Jenkins lead-off walk, followed by a Rebecca Montgomery two-run home run to left field two at-bats later. Guilford countered one half-inning later with a three-run first frame, capped by a Bray two-run, two-out home run to center field. The WildCats re-gained the lead in the top of the fourth frame with a two-run rally where Randolph loaded the bases with one out and converted on a bases-loaded single and a sacrifice fly. The Quakers tied the contest in the bottom of the fifth after two fielder’s choice situations when Sabrina Moreno doubled to right center field to even the score, 4-4. Guilford claimed the lead again in the bottom of the sixth inning in a two-run rally, all with two outs, where two hits and an error produced a rally. The WildCats produced three hits and a two-run rally one half-inning later to tie the game and hold the Quakers in the bottom-half of the inning with the bases loaded. Randolph sparked a four-run rally, started by Nowak’s sacrifice fly. Guilford loaded the bases with one out before the WildCats retired the Quakers to end the game.

Snead (2-2) claimed a complete-game win in the first contest, striking out four batters and walking one in the one-hit effort. The senior also finished one-for-two with two RBI. Bray hit totaled two home runs and three RBI as part of a three-for-six afternoon.

Hickman led the WildCats, finishing the afternoon three-for-six, with two RBI and two double. Rebecca Montgomery hit three-for-four in game two, totaling four RBI and a home run.

Makayla Carver (5-2) claimed the loss in game two, throwing the final three innings, giving up six runs (one unearned) on nine hits. Rebekah Langston struck out three batters in a three-inning middle-relief effort while Maggie Shaffer earned the start, walking three and striking out one in two innings.

Hannah Winfree (3-3) claimed the game-one loss for Randolph in a four and one-third inning effort where she gave up three runs on five hits and struck out three. Gracyn Allen-Ingle (4-3) took the game-two win in relief of starter Lindsay Chaney. Allen-Ingle threw one and two-third innings and struck out four batters after throwing an inning and two-thirds scoreless in game one.

The Quakers take to the road Wednesday afternoon, traveling to Emory & Henry College for a 1:30 p.m. ODAC doubleheader.
