HPU MLAX drops Easter tussle at Richmond, 7-3

• Freshman Tim Troutner made 12 saves and caused two turnovers on the day.

RICHMOND, Va. – The High Point University men’s lacrosse team fell 7-3 at Richmond on Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers (4-5, 0-2) found themselves in a 3-1 hole after one quarter and never led as the Spiders (7-2) moved to 3-0 in conference play.

“We had some good individual efforts today, but collectively we did not put together a 60-minute effort,” head coach Jon Torpey said. “When you play a conference game against a strong opponent, you need to execute with speed and urgency for the entire game and today we didn’t do that.”

Offensively, the Purple & White tallied three unassisted goals. Junior Michael LeClair’s fourth-quarter goal extended his scoring streak to 35 straight contests.

In goal, freshman Tim Troutner made a dozen stops while causing two Richmond turnovers. Meanwhile, seniors Zack Price, Tyler Cook and freshman Joel Schwarz were credited with caused turnovers.

Seniors Dan Lomas and Matt Thistle added the teams other two goals while freshman Alex Woodall went 8-13 in the face-off circle and picked up a team-best four ground balls.

The Spiders earned a +7 margin on the ground, which led to a 33-23 edge in shots in the game.

After four scoreless minutes to open the contest, the Spiders scored back-to-back goals in 47 seconds to take a 2-0 lead (10:03). Thistle, then, got the Purple & White on the board with an goal at the 5:26 mark (2-1).

Richmond added another goal with 2:02 remaining in the opening frame to regain a two-goal edge. However, Lomas pulled HPU within one goal (3-2) with 8:46 left until the break.

Five minutes later Richmond upped its lead to two and took a 4-2 advantage into the locker room. Troutner limited the damage stopping six of the Spiders’ 10 shots on goal.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Spiders opened the fourth period with a 3-0 run (7-2, 8:42).

LeClair extended his scoring steak with a goal at the 8:15 mark (7-3). However, the squad couldn’t get any closer falling 7-3.

The Panthers are back in Vert Stadium on Sunday at noon to host Mercer.
