HPU baseball drops 13-5 decision at Maryland

• High Point lost at Maryland by a score of 13-5 to even the weekend series at one game each.
• Junior Josh Greene had a double and a home run and scored three runs.
• The Panthers are 19-8 at the midway point of the regular season.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The High Point University baseball team fell on the road at Maryland by a score of 13-5 on Saturday afternoon in College Park, Md. The loss evens the weekend series between the two teams at a game each.

“Things blew up on us in a bad way in the first three innings,” head coach Craig Cozart said. “Our guys did not stop competing today. We scrapped and played the game hard. We are still in position to win the series tomorrow so I expect us to come out with great energy and intent and go home with the victory.”

Junior Andre Scrubb suffered the loss for High Point and dropped to 5-2 on the season. Scrubb pitched just 1-2/3 innings and gave up six runs, three earned, on one hit and seven walks with one strikeout.

Taylor Bloom allowed four runs in 5-2/3 innings and improved to 4-2 for the Terps. Bloom allowed 11 hits and struck out two.

High Point reaches the midway point of the regular season with a record of 19-8 while the Terrapins improved to 14-13.

Maryland jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first on just one infield single. The Terrapins scored the first run on a wild pitch then saw three come home thanks to a two-out error on a pop up behind second base.

The Terps added two runs in the second on back-to-back bases-loaded walks then chipped in four runs in the third, with the final two coming on a home run by Marty Costes, to go ahead 10-0.

High Point cut into the Maryland lead with two runs in the fifth on a double by sophomore Hunter Lee to pull HPU within eight at 10-2. Lee hit a hard shot down the line in right to score juniors Josh Greene and Drew Fopeano who both singled.

After Maryland scored three times in the bottom of the fifth, including two on Costes’ second home run of the day, the Panthers came back with two in the top of the sixth to make the score 13-4. Sophomore Austen Zente and Fopeano hit back-to-back RBI singles for High Point.

Greene added one more run to the Panthers’ total with his first home run of the season in the eighth inning.

Three different HPU hitters finished with three hits on the day as Greene went 3-4 with a home run, a double and three runs scored, Lee went 3-5 with a double and two RBI and Fopeano finished 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

High Point and Maryland will meet in Smith Stadium for the rubber game of the three-game weekend series on Sunday, April 2, at 1 p.m. The contest is HPU’s first rubber game since facing Marist on Feb. 28.
