Balanced Effort Carries Elon Track and Field on Final Day at VertKlasse Meeting

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team had a balanced attack on the final day of the VertKlasse Meeting on Saturday, April 2, at Vert Stadium with several athletes setting new school, personal and season bests.

Bryanna Hames won the discus throw as the sophomore had a heave of 50.27m, breaking her own school-record. Another personal-record was set in the hammer throw with Briana O’Grady tossing a 46.20m.

Jen Esposito won the 400-meter hurdles for the second straight meet as the Mansfield, Mass., native clocked a time of 58.68 in the race. Teammate Lydia Laws was third in the race with her time of 1:02.42 while Samantha Brown was fifth at her new personal-record of 1:02.66.

Elon’s 4×100-meter relay team of Simone Jackson, Esposito, Desiree Ross and Sydney Griffin was the runner-up in the event with the quartet’s season-best time of 46.83. The Phoenix’s 4×400-meter relay group of Lauren Brzozowski, Katie Arbogast, Laws and Esposito was also the runner-up with a time of 3:53.65.

In the long jump, Carrie Abraham was the fourth overall and the second among collegiate athletes with her personal-best leap of 5.74m. Fellow junior Jayna Coyle was third in the triple jump as the Somerset, Pa., native had a personal-record leap of 11.70m while Abraham was fourth at 11.68m.

Jackson set a new personal-record in the 100-meter dash with her time of 12.00 and finished fifth. Ross was fourth in 100-meter dash participation race with a 12.27, moving her into the top-five all-time in school history.

Griffin was third overall in the 100-meter hurdles at 13.89. Emily Dixon and Laws were fourth and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles participation race, respectively. Dixon clocked a 14.66 while Laws was at 14.77.

Elon travels to the University of Virginia next week for the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational on Saturday, April 9.
