College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Washington and Lee 7, Guilford 5

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Graeme Weaver scored a game-high three goals in Washington and Lee University’s 7-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse win at Guilford College Saturday. Guilford (4-6, 1-3 ODAC) led each of the first three quarters before two Weaver tallies in a decisive 4-0 Generals’ run put the game out of reach.

Weaver’s first goal gave Washington and Lee (8-2, 4-0 ODAC) its first lead of the game, 3-2, 2:10 into the second quarter. The Generals’ maintained the narrow lead until a Washington and Lee defender knocked the ball past goalie Wyatt Devine into his own net for an own goal 17 seconds before halftime that tied the game at 3-3.

The Quakers’ Alex Brownlee started the second-half scoring 1:57 into the third quarter for a 4-3 Guilford lead. The teams traded blows for the rest of the frame before Weaver tied the game at 4-4 with 2:02 left in the third. With Brownlee off two minutes due to penalties, Joe Perella netted the go-ahead goal with 11 seconds left in the third quarter off a Sam Dardani assist. The Quakers appeared to control possession just prior to Perella’s score, but an infraction on Guilford turned the ball back to Washington and Lee.

Weaver’s final goal of the game opened a 6-4 Generals’ edge and proved the game winner. Dardani added Washington and Lee’s second man-up goal with 8:53 left that opened the largest lead for either team. Guilford took advantage of a late two-man advantage when Dylan Haupt scored his second goal of the game off a Zachary Berkowitz assist with 1:37 remaining.

Washington and Lee’s Jack Clarke won the ensuing face-off and the Generals’ called time out with 1:20 remaining. The shorthanded Generals’ effectively eluded the Quakers’ pressure and kept possession for a minute to secure the win.

Weaver’s three scores paced the Generals’ offense. Dardani also had three points on two goals and an assist. Perella notched a goal and an assist. Clarke won nine-of-15 draws and Devine made nine saves.
Haupt scored a team-high two goals and Berkowitz contributed a goal and an assist. Connor Manning won six of 12 face-offs and collected a game-high four ground balls. Goalie Parker Styles made 12 stops. Erik Fries caused three turnovers.
