College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 15, Shenandoah 12

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Marina Bailey scored a game- and career-high six goals in Guilford College’s 15-12 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse win over Shenandoah University Saturday. The Quakers (5-5, 3-0 ODAC) won their third straight league game by fending off a pair of Hornets’ (2-8, 0-2 ODAC) comebacks.

Bailey’s third goal of the day opened a 6-2 Quakers’ lead 9:30 before halftime. Shenandoah responded by scoring four times over the next 4:28 to knot the score at 6-6, which is where it remained until halftime.

The teams traded goals in the second half’s first 10 minutes. Brittany Arndt’s unassisted tally gave Shenandoah its first lead (9-8) since the opening minute, but Guilford’s Carter MacLeod evened the score with a free-position goal nearly two minutes later. The score started a 5-0 Quakers’ run that featured two goals and an assist by Amanda Dionne. Bailey’s sixth and final goal capped the spurt and opened a 13-9 edge with 12:54 to play.

The Hornets answered again with three goals in a two-minute span and made it a 13-12 game on Abby Zorrilla’s free-position goal with 6:52 left. Shenandoah had a shot to tie the game again at the 5:21 mark, but Guilford goalie Sammi Milbourn stopped Becky Bove on a free-position shot and recovered the loose ball.

Shenandoah’s bench received a yellow card on the ensuing Guilford clear attempt, which put the Hornets a player down. Guilford capitalized with an extra-man goal by Holly Kozak off a Kelly Martin feed with 4:28 left. The Quakers’ defense held and Milbourn stopped an Arndt free-position with 38 seconds left. Demming Carlow’s insurance tally with eight seconds left provided the game’s final margin.

Dionne finished with three goals and two assists for five points. Carlow had three goals and one assist, plus two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Kozak scored twice and MacLeod contributed three ground balls and five draw controls, both team highs. Milbourn stopped 13 shots and picked up three ground balls.

Zorrilla’s four goals paced Shenandoah’s offense. Annie McCorry notched three goals and Miranda Rudacille tallied twice. Arndt had a strong game with a goal, an assist, a game-high six ground balls and four draws. Rachel Levy made seven saves before giving way to Brittany Bain for the final 21:38. Bain had five stops and took the loss.

Coach Sarah Lamphier’s Quakers host league-rival Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday (4/9) at 2:00 p.m.
