Elon Outdoor Track Season Continues at Aggie Invitational

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team continues its outdoor campaign this weekend as the Phoenix heads to nearby North Carolina A&T for the Aggie Invitational on Saturday, April 9, at the Irwin Belk Track.

VertKlasse Meeting Recap
The Phoenix had a balanced effort at its last meet, the VertKlasse Meeting, last weekend, April 1-2, at High Point University. Elon had a share of athletes set personal and school-records at the meet highlighted by sophomore Bryanna Hames breaking her school mark in the discus with a heave of 50.27m. The Charlotte, N.C., native won the event as her throw was the only distance to pass the 50-meter mark.

Jen Esposito won the 400-meter hurdles for the second straight meet as the Mansfield, Mass., native clocked a time of 58.68 in the race. Teammate Lydia Laws was third in the race with her time of 1:02.42 while Samantha Brown was fifth at her new personal-record of 1:02.66.

In the long jump, Carrie Abraham was the fourth overall and the second among collegiate athletes with her personal-best leap of 5.74m. Fellow junior Jayna Coyle was third in the triple jump as the Somerset, Pa., native had a personal-record leap of 11.70m while Abraham was fourth at 11.68m.

Elon’s 4×100-meter relay team of Simone Jackson, Esposito, Desiree Ross and Sydney Griffin was the runner-up in the event with the quartet’s season-best time of 46.83. Jackson also set a new personal-record in the 100-meter dash with her time of 12.00 and finished fifth. Ross was fourth in 100-meter dash participation race with a 12.27, moving her into the top-five all-time in school history.

In the pole vault, Nicole Karabas took sole possession of third on the program’s all-time performance list as the rookie cleared the bar at 10′ 6.75″ (3.21m). She finished sixth overall in the event.

Outdoor Prelims
• Esposito sits at No. 12 in the NCAA East Regional rankings in the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 58.01. Tereza Novotna is the other Phoenix athlete that sits in the top-20 in the East Region in her respective event as she sits at No. 17 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 10:28.05.
• Elon currently holds the top marks in the Colonial Athletic Association Outdoor performance list in five events; Esposito in the 400-meter hurdles, Sydney Griffin in the 100-meter hurdles (13.63), Novotna in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Hames in the discus throw and the 4×400-meter relay team at 3:48.05.
• Elon will have 20 athletes scheduled to compete at the Aggie Invitational on Saturday. The Phoenix distance group was schedule to compete at the university of Virginia this weekend, but will not due to extreme weather conditions.
• Brigid Brennan set a new personal-record in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:36.22 at the VertKlasse Meeting.
• Briana O’Grady also set a new personal-best in the hammer throw with her toss of 46.20m.
• Elon is also sitting as the runner-up on the CAA Outdoor Performance list in the 100-meters, 200-meters, 400-meters, 1,500-meters, the 4×100-meter relay, and the long and triple jump.
