Huskies Down Elon Baseball in Series Opener

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Northeastern baseball team scored four runs over the first three innings and made those tallies stand up as the Huskies defeated the Elon Phoenix 6-3 in Colonial Athletic Association action from Friedman Diamond on Friday afternoon.

Elon (10-20, 2-7 CAA) got two hits apiece from Ryne Ogrenand Kory Shumate, while Liam O’Regan hit his fourth home run of the season.

Northeastern (15-12, 4-2) saw seven different players record a hit and Cam Walsh drive in two in the win.

The loss went to Mason Daniels (2-3) who allowed four runs on just two hits in 3.1 innings.

Aaron Civale (5-1) picked up the win after limiting the Phoenix to three runs on seven hits in 8.0 innings. Mike Fitzgerald threw a perfect ninth to record his fifth save of the year.

How It Happened: Northeastern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first without recording a hit. With one out, the next four hitters drew walks to score a run. A fielder’s choice then plated the second.

The Huskies added a single run in the second on a sacrifice fly and another in the third on a Josh Treff single.

Elon first got on the board in the second when Tyler McVicar scored on Will Nance’s triple down the right field line. Elon would cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fourth as O’Regan belted a 2-2 pitch deep to right-center for a two-run homer.

It remained a 4-3 game until the seventh when the Huskies got one on a sacrifice fly. Northeastern would tack on a final unearned marker in the eighth.

Notes: Nick Zammarelli’s hitting streak ended after 12 games… The Phoenix issued a season-high 14 walks… Elon is now 2-2 all-time against Northeastern.

On Deck: The teams will play game two of this three-game conference series at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 9.
