College Softball Finals – Guilford 5–5, Lynchburg 2–14

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Caroline Barnette connected on a walk-off two-out home run in game one of a Sunday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Lynchburg College to earn a split of the twinbill. The Quakers claimed game one, 5-2, while Lynchburg took the nightcap, 14-5, in five innings.

Lynchburg (18-15, 7-3 ODAC) posted game one’s first run in the opening frame on a Danielle Powell single with one out in the inning. Back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the third inning from the Quakers (21-11, 6-6 ODAC) tied the contest as Savannah Yale collected a RBI-single in the second at-bat of the frame. Lynchburg countered in the fifth inning as a Skylar Dickens lead-off triple led to a run one at-bat later as the Hornets re-claimed the lead. After Guilford held off Lynchburg’s potential go-ahead run at third base in the top half of the inning, the Quakers faced two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Brooks Bray brought home Laura Hall to tie the game. The Quakers faced two quick outs again one inning later when the Quakers produced two singles to set up Barnette’s home run to end the game.

Lynchburg jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first inning of game two with two home runs and all hits coming with two outs. The Quakers produced a two-run rally in the bottom half of the inning thanks to back-to-back singles from the top of the order in a three-hit inning. The Quakers responded to a Lynchburg second-inning grand slam with a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning from Casey Snead. Lynchburg countered one final time with a four-run fourth inning, with all but one run scored before the second out, to secure the win.

Laura Hall led the Quakers at the plate, batting five-for-seven over the doubleheader with two stolen bases. Snead hit two-for six with four RBI on the afternoon, all in game two. Bray hit three-for-three in the first contest, representing one of two Quakers with a multi-hit effort in game one.

Amy Breeson totaled six RBI in game two for Lynchburg while Leslie Bourgeois tallied four.

Courtney Lackey (9-2) took the game one complete-game win for the Quakers, striking out two and walking one. Makayla Carver (6-5) took the game two loss in a one and one-third inning effort where she gave up nine runs and walked two. Lackey threw the next two and two-third innings while Snead threw the final inning scoreless.

Conner English (13-8) took the complete-game loss in game one, fanning one. Kirsten Copley (5-4) claimed the game two win, striking out two and walking one.
