Pitching, Timely Hitting Give Elon Baseball Series Win at Northeastern

BROOKLINE, Mass. – After a strong pitching performance yesterday, the Elon University baseball team got more of the same on Sunday as the Phoenix defeated the Northeastern Huskies 3-2 in 10 innings to take the Colonial Athletic Association series.

Tyler McVicar homered and scored twice for Elon (12-20, 4-7 CAA), while Kory Shumate went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair, including the game-winner.

Zach Perry was 2-for-5 with one RBI and Keith Kelly was 2-for-5 with a run scored for the Huskies (15-14, 4-4 CAA).

Chris Hall (2-1) threw a career-long 4.0 innings and struck out a personal-best five hitters to earn the win in relief. Phoenix starter Jordan Barrett fanned a career-high eight hitters and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits in 6.0 innings.

Northeastern closer Mike Fitzgerald (1-2) took the loss after allowing one run on one hit in an inning. Husky starter Dustin Hunt recorded 10 strikeouts and allowed two runs on four hits in 7.0 innings.

How It Happened: With the game tied at two after nine innings, Will Nance led off the Elon 10th by drawing his third walk of the game. A sacrifice bunt advanced Nance to second before Shumate grounded a ball through the right side to score Nance with the winning run.

Northeastern took a 1-0 lead in the first when Perry doubled home a run. Elon would tie it up in the second as Shumate singled home McVicar.

The Huskies would go back in front, 2-1, on a sacrifice fly in the sixth only to see McVicar send an 0-1 pitch over the wall in right-center with one out in the seventh. The homer was McVicar’s third of the season.

Notes: Of the 60 outs in the game, 25 were recorded on strikeouts… Elon turned its 32nd double play of the season… Barrett picked off his fifth runner of the season, giving the Phoenix 13 for the year.

On Deck: Elon is scheduled to return home to take on North Carolina State at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12.
