Elon Baseball Downed by #12 North Carolina State

ELON, N.C. – The 12th-ranked North Carolina State Wolfpack scored seven runs in the first inning on its way to a 23-3 defeat of the Elon Phoenix on Tuesday night at Latham Park.

Elon (12-21) saw Ryne Ogren record two of the team’s seven hits, while Danny Lynch drove in two runs.

For NC State (24-9), Chance Shepard homered twice and drove in four. Brett Kinneman added four hits, scored twice and drove in seven runs.

Phoenix starter Robbie Welhaf (0-1) took the loss after allowing six runs on six hits. He did not record an out.

The win went to Travis Orwig (1-0) who threw 2.0 shutout innings in relief.

How It Happened: The first eight batters of the game reached for the Wolfpack, including six consecutive hits. That stretch saw Brock Deatherage drive in one with a double, Preston Palmeiro score two with a double and Kinneman plate two with a double. An error and fielder’s choice scored the other two runs of the inning.

In its first at bat, Elon put runners on second and third with one out following a Tyler McVicar double. Lynch then scored one as he reached on a fielder’s choice. With two down and runners on the corners, Brett Guba’s single up the middle scored a second Phoenix run.

NC State came right back with a pair in the second on a Joe Dunand single and Kinneman sacrifice fly.

The Phoenix got its final run in the second when Austin Leeney scored on a Lynch single.

Notes: Elon pitchers struck out 13 hitters, the third consecutive game with at least 11 strikeouts by the pitching staff… Ogren has had four multi-hit outings in the last six games.
